These come in several colors ranging from yello to spotted yellow and shades of orange.
Common name: Blackberry Lily, Leopard Lily
Family: Iridaceae
Genus: Belamcanda
Species chinensis
Hi Azalea, beautiful photo of Belamcanda, but this is probably B. flabellata, the yellow species. B. chinensis is the orange one.
Well, I grew these from seeds - some are orange out of the same flowers!!
Interesting... As I recall T & M has Belamcanda in their catalogue, and show a purple one also, which is definitely NOT a Belamcanda. Yours looks to me like the one called 'Hello Yellow'.
Is the foliage on the yellow flowered ones a bit more blue, and the plants shorter?
I gathered seeds from B. specimens that ranged from red-brown to pale yellow, spotted, banded, or striped with contrasting colors. With open pollination, over 6 years, one stand has become almost solely yellow (flabellata?), with little contrasting color. Another stand has become almost solely orange (chinensis?), with some spottiness. A third stand still shows a wide range of variation.
I wonder if the originals were hybrids, and some are reverting to type. Is there evidence that the B. spp form hybrids?
I am very confused as to what sp I have.
