Thanks Lani - hope I can find some before then! My DIL wants some badly - she wants to form a screen between them and their neighbors.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

is it hardy here?

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

If it's hardy where Lani is in zone 6 it should be ok for us.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh! I have a small plant, I'm not sure if it's ready to take a piece, I'll let you know in the morning. I wish I'd known, I'd have put it in the ground and now it's too late for this year :(

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Not too late to put it into the ground we planted ours in late October. It is not necessarily hardy here. I just put it in a place where it is sheltered from the winter wind and the house seems to keep that area warmer than the rest of the yard. It has made two winters so far and it is getting bigger. So far so good. I also put about four inches of compost on it in the late fall and clean most of it off in the spring. Doing everything I can to help it out. The book I have says that it is hardy to 0.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm looking too!!!!!!!!!

I just came across it and added it to my wish list a few days ago. Ain't it gorgeous?!

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

I will have to put it on my want list too,. I had sent very nice plants for a trade of it (must be almost 2 years ago, from another site) many reasons given in response to some of my e-mail follow ups =-no plant.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

So sorry Marcia!! This is why I have decided not to do any tradong with non-subscribers! I do SASE, but get the postage up front. I have found that here nearly ALL members arte great traders, after all - we do have our reputation to think of.

Hi Y'all,

I spoke to shahin last night and he said they were not ready for dividing yet. I'll keep you posted when they are.
Apparently they are not as invasive as the regular bamboo?
Class is going great! Learning a lot about how to make more plants :-) to share and trade!

Azalea, mine isn't ready to divide yet, but maybe in the spring.

I order bamboos from Bambu-u, the price for a gallon of Black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) is $12 plus postage. I put in a recommendation in Garden Watchdog and currently have an order pending. They send really nice stuff, and they have all survived for me so far.

I have to say that just going out and digging bamboo, and preparing it to ship is not easy (they usually die soon after too). It is best to pot it up, water it regularly, and after maybe 6 months or so, they have a better chance of surviving when you give it to someone else.

I got this bamboo once in trade but it might have disappeared. (The culms come up green and are supposed to gradually turn black). I shall know that I have it if one of my bamboos start turning black.

They do take a while to turn black. A neighbor has a clump about 3 feet in diameter, and only about half is black... mostly the inside stalks. It doesn't seem to spread as rapidly as non-clumping bamboo, but I forgot to ask him if it is classified as a 'clumping' bamboo.

The Phyllostachys are all runners. In my experience, if they survive their first year in the ground, they start gradually getting taller and bigger, and don't really start running until the third or fourth year.

To quote the American Bamboo Society Species List about Black Bamboo: "Culms turn jet black after the first 6 months to one year. Popular because of its graceful habit and the sharp accent of its culm color. Said to grow larger in northern climates." Max ht. 30', max diameter 2" Minimum temperature 0 F.

a gardening friend has it, they put down an 18 inch deep metal barrier around it. i have some i have been afraid to put in the ground. she says it can take 2 years to turn black, not sure of the exact variety but she swears it'll run everywhere. they sell it in 5 gallon buckets for 50.00 in 5 gallon buckets in the fall sometimes, taken up from where it has run through that metal barrier.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

so arlene, how big can you let it get in a 5 gallon bucket?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

tig, i think it has to be in a bigger pot to get size on it but i don't really know. i think i'm just gonna beg for a piece of golden bamboo from sylvia, it doesn't run and she says it's her favorite. then again they have 20 acres. and if you don't mind it running it doesn't matter anyway, i just don't want to put it in the wrong place! sylvia has some canes in her house in some kind of flower pot, they are huge and gorgeous of the black...
