I took the garden test that was posted in the other forum and was determined as a tropical person. The sad part is I'm not even close to the climate that's required, so just call me a lurker here. I guess I'll learn to be a pro at identifying plants/flowers during our vacations to Key West.

Hi Everybody,
I just planted my first garden here in FL. I purchased two Banana Shrubs which are a member of the Chinese Magnolia, from a greenhouse up north. They both arrived in good condition and I immediately put them each into a new clay pot with Miracle Grow potting soil. One has new leaves sprouting up while the other is deader than a door nail. I called Logee's Greenhouse and they informed me that tropicals DO NOT like fertilizer. they sent me a replacement and I put it into regular potting soil. Has anyone heard of this before? Any comments, suggestions, ideas or whatever is greatly appreciated.
Perhaps start your own new thread rather than post on one that's 5 1/2 years old with an entirely unrelated subject. That way, you automatically notices of any responses and all the tropical experts can help you. I'm not one, sorry.
Hi Calif Sue
Thanks for the info. As you can tell I just joined Dave's too. I'll look into how to start a new thread, it shouldn't be that hard. Maybe I'll get to talk to you then.
I use fertilizer all the time on my tropicals, especially the containered ones. I couldn't imagine not.

Welcome to the tropical forum, don't worry soon you'll be posting like a pro. My tropicals love fertalizer although it is easy to burn some of them that have fine root systems if they are confined to pots ( which I've done). Heres a trick from a Master Gardner Brian Williams
Instead of pouring liquid fertalizer that may burn the roots, try using the dry time release pellets and make a hole down the side of the pot with your finger then pour them in and cover . This way the fertalizer will be released away from the roots slowly andthe roots will make their way over to it and take what they want without getting burned.
Have fun

Any advice on how to grow and where to get cuttings for the Dragon Fruit? It is a tropical succulant with really spectacular flowers and amzingly delicious fruit. I have a few seeds from last nights fruit but planting the seeds would take about 3 years for fruit...that is if I could even get them to grow. Thanks
maxxie,
Welcome
You would be better off starting a new thread as a lot of people will not have this on their "watch" list.
Hap
I agree with Hap....also you might try the cactus and succulents forum as the plant is a Cereus...
Welcome
I use fertilizer all the time on everything. I use different soils all the time, but must say that I have read often that MG can be a problem w/ new/young plants, etc. I haven't had that experience but maybe a soild w/o fertilizer in it would be best for young plants and then you could add one of the time released products.
You are all so wonderful and willing to share your knowledge. Thank you so much.
We just like to hear ourselves talk! LOL.
