That's a new one on me, Psilo. I'm going to have to give it a try next year. Will it bloom the first year if started early indoors? The zoning is a bit iffy for me.

yes. I have sown quite a few from seed this April and they are reaching flowering stage right now, though I suspect they will be better next year. Some good ones to look out for are Party Girl and Purpetta. Hopefully I should have some seed available later if you are interested.

Yes, very much so. Hollyhocks are very popular in the US, but they are biennial and don't winter over here. Carnival Mix is advertised as blooming in the first year, but the buds usually go in the first frost here. So, I've tried some of the other malvas. Mochatas winter over nicely here, but they don't have the impressive stature. I've found the trimestris bloom profusely here the first year, but don't winter over for me. I hate to lose them, but treated as an annual, they are still lovely. My sylvestris are blooming like crazy now, and they have reached about 6 feet. I should have lots of mauritiana seed this fall, if you are interested. http://plantsdatabase.com/go/51465/

Mauritiana seed would be very good weezin. I think that my mother grows a variegated form of this though I think the yellow clashes horribly with the pruple flowers

Variegation is always remarkable, but not always pleasing. I don't think yellow and purple would compliment one another, but it's probably interesting before it blooms. I feel the same way about the Lamium 'Golden Anniversary'. It has wonderful variegation, but when the pinkish-lavender flowers come on, it's a bit hard to look at! http://plantsdatabase.com/go/2883/
