My papays at work that I grew from seeds in the early spring are starting to set fruit!!!Yippeeeeee! :-)
My papayas at work.
Well, where is the picture? Wish you had mine now. The first fruit is about 3-4 inches long now. I know it won't make it before frost, and I'm certainly not going to try to dig it up. It would take a backhoe. If I have one next year, it will go in a big pot like the brugs do.
brugie..I have one in a pot and doubt if I bring in any of the big plants..too many all opver downtown too! LOL
remember to save me some of those seeds!! can't believe it grew that fast in one season, and I wanted to see a picture too!
Good job! Ours have been flowering for months but no sign of fruit. Isn't the scent of the flowers incredible?
Kyle, would a papaya from the grocery be the same as what yours is?? cause I could just pick one up.
Kyle I just picked up one the other day. Do you let the seeds dry out first and then plant or plant them fresh?
Well this is the pits. I have had one for 3 years and it has never set fruit. WHY
tiG you can use the ones from the grocery store...mine were from an Asian market..all different kinds there. And yes you need to plant the seeds as soon as you cut the fruit open...don't let the gummy film on the seeds dry out..take each and plant immediately..keep them warm all winter papayas hate cool and cold temps. WHEW!! thats a mouthful!!LOL
thanks!! I'll get mine started now ? or wait til late winter??
anytime is alright I started ours in January.
Kyle did you give them fertilizer and if so what strength? I guess I like my plants pumped up on fertilzerroids so they develop quickly...lol...no waiting 3 years for me, no sir jim bob.
joydie..no fertilizer after going outdoors.. :-)
oh, no, eclipse...does that mean that the seeds i have gail smuggling from hawaii won't work when she gets home from hawaii? i don't think they'll let her bring the whole fruit, will they? joydie, same fertilizerroids you told me about...10-5something-10?
Meiyu just go to the grocery store and buy one. Plant the seeds to get lots of little babies and then you will have lots of plants to trade for new things. It will be fun to watch them grow.
You can also buy Taro root and plant those up. Mine sprouted and rooted within a week. I paid about 60 cents for the root compared to $4 for a plant. Great way to get more plant trades and landscape around that new pond you put in.
Joydie1, I know what Tarot cards are, but not taro root? Gail is bringing me a whole papaya from Hawaii on Wednesday...we get Mexican papaya here at the grocery store, and they're not as good. Oh, by the way, someone told her where to get the rainbow plumeria!!!! I think she's just gonna smuggle...gosh I hope she gets the job out there...I'll be swimming in tropicals!!!!!
Meiyu,
You certainly will have lots of tropicals. Be carefult that they do not search her suit cases as they will confiscate the plants and the fruit. If she "packs" a lunch with the papaya they are less inclined to take that. Let me know how you make out.
will let her know right now, joydie1...thanks!!!! did you get the pics of all the seeds i sent you????
Meiyu,
You forwarded the pics that you got confused with Pebble. I can't open them so I still don't know what they look like
:-(...can you send them again without the forward setting?
I'll save the photos so I can identify them. I have one solitary Japanese Milky Way morning glory that is pink with a white star and border. When there are more seeds I'll share them with you. I'm looking for other Japanese Morning glory seeds. I have more ugly fencing to hide...lol.
oh, me too, joydie1...i have no vines on my fences yet, but hope to soon!! i would love the morning glory seeds!!! i will share whatever i can get my hands on with you...got some great things coming for trade soon with planterrik!! anything i can keep alive long enough to seed or take cuttings from, i will...hehe!! i'll email you again w/o fwd.
Boy, I will never grow one in the ground again if I want to keep it, but it is large. However, the leaves are so beautiful that I sure hate to see it go with the cold weather. A great tropical plant.
