How do you prune yours and for what reasons? Just for looks? How do I prune above the Y for more buds or do I? (hoping I asked enough to get it all covered:)
pruning 101
Hi tiG,
I don't prune above the Y either unless I have a huge amount of buds and then will just remove leaves to make room for them to open. Generally I will prune everything off to the Y, but have to say that at this time of the year I tend to get a little lazy and they start putting on trunk growth again. Haven't done much to HG for fear of messing it up and Culebra is defoliating itself right now. Others area looking good. I would also like to know if there are techniques for pruning above the Y to improve bloom and umbrella growth.
I don't plan on pruning until just before frost. Then will simply cut up all the limbs above the "Y" to get cuttings to start the brugs again for next summer.....as well as for trading.
So far, I have rooted several brugs from the small branches that tend to grow below the "Y". In this summer heat, they seem to root like weeds:)
Also rooted three pieces from above the "Y" on my versicolor peach, simply because some local juvenile delinquent upset the pot and broke off the three pieces from the region above the "Y". All three are setting bloom buds already....and are only about 8" high in their small pots:)
Just my two cents worth. LOL

you're talking about cutting back, right? I mean during the season, while they are growing and you want them to look their best, what grooming/pruning do you do? Want to get everyone's input and how they do things.
tiG, I just keep the trunk below the Y stripped of leaves to make it look tree like. The only leaves I take off above the Y are ones that interfere with a flower bud.
tiG I need a quick course in pruning. I have one brug in a large pot and several days ago I watered and evidently overwatered. Bobbie told me I was overwatering but did I listen, well if I had I wouldn't be posting now. I told her they love water and then the next day I happened to notice the leaves were sort of wilted. I went to see what the problem was and water was standing on the dirt so bad it looked like a flood had come to town. I leaned the pot over and ran some of the water out but it is really looking bad now. It was full of buds and they don't seem to be affected but the leaves are headed to leaf heaven. Maybe I can find some artificial leaves and glue them on for a couple of months.
