Jasmine Tobacco (Nicotiana alata)

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

This plant is over five feet tall this year. Bought it as a small bedding plant, but plan to try to collect seeds this year. One of my favorites, due to the strong jasmine nighttime fragance of this old fashioned variety.

Common name: Jasmine Tobacco
Family: Solanaceae
Genus: Nicotiana
Species alata

Hey, Penny: I gave a friend one of these after she got a whiff of the great jasmine smell. She wants to try to winter it over in a cool but not freezing spot in her home. She asked if she should cut it back, and I remembered you saying that you had wintered yours over on your deck by putting a blanket over it. Should she cut the nicotiana back before storing it away?

Actually, being the dummy I am sometimes, I didn't winter over this particular plant, but Carrie and Charlie did, out in the regular flower bed that has a little shelter, not much, with no cover, so I know it will work here, too. Actuyally (blush, giggle) mine DID come bck, but I thought it was something else, so I yanked it out....oops! She just lets her's die back and then trims it for looks, and waits for the spring to kick in. This one has lots of seeds, so I'll try to collect some and send them as they mature. So that brings me to wonder this: Is the plant itself coming back, as a half hardy annual, or is it re-seeding? HMMMM
