Hybridizing for Dummies :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Another Brug newbie and I were having a conversation, eager to get in on all the fun. Can I ask a dumb question or ten?? Let's say we have the basic Brugs: Dr. Seuss, Frosty Pink, Whiskers, Jean Pasco and a few experiments grown from seed. Which can you cross or not cross and what crosses would be a waste of time? Obviously we are not dealing with Ocre and Rothkirch or sangs so the whole biological lesson is not needed. I know some types will not cross at all, and others are most likely to throw out whites. Is there an easy answer to the question or no?
Thanks for letting me ramble. :)

Very good question, not dumb at all! I too am waiting for an answer, as I plan to try to pollinate the pinks. Do not wish to get whites, only colors.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Chele, you can cross all of what you listed with each other. There is no way to avoid whites though, if you don't want to go through the trouble and come out with a white, it's best to stick with cuttings.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

from memory, eclipse says suavolens types and also versicolor X versicolor are more likely to throw out whites. monika posted on another thread yesterday or today that yellow X pink was more likely to throw out whites, don't know if it was just that particular type or all. and sometimes i think you may get almost all whites but something interesting also.

i think this is a very good question. i have no first hand knowledge, this is definitely a brugman, monika, kyle kind of question for me.

FSH, TX

I generally cross pinks to yellows or yellows to pinks and different species crosses. I get lots of whites though. Of course Monika has explained this for us. I too wish I had more colors, but there is something to be said for getting color out of a more difficult cross as well. I know, I'm of no help.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I would think two brugs which are very much alike might be a waste of time, like Isabella X Frosty, but for the most part, its all a gamble.Monika,Eric and Kyle, they have a pretty good Idea of what throws what ,where us beginners are just making educated guesses to what will happen when we breed A X B .We just put 2 brugs together and hope for the best......

Hey, why are the answers showing up on Tonny's Mottle Pink post? A little game you play with newbies?? LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

we go which ever way the wind blows Seed!!!! you never know where a thread will turn.

FSH, TX

Rosabelle is Rothkirch (pink aurea) x Ocre (golden candida)...That cross gave many pink offspring...Of course Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink gave many peach to pink offspring and Amber Rose has yellow and peach to pink stripes.

Thanks again Eric, this is all I wanted to know, with what I have to work with.

What do you think of the Rosa Traum that isn't (Adora) What can I cross it with??? It is supposed to be one of Rothkirch's offspring.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Now I am really sad. Brugmansia just threw out a bunch of names of ones I don't have! LOL Thank you for the tips/trials you have listed. Next year I am hoping to see my brugs do more earlier in the season so I will have opportunity to play.

Badseed, you sure got the ball rollin'!!!

Thank you.

one more unanswered. Do I take the anthers out before I make the cross on every one?? if so, is there some science to it that won't destroy my flowers? cause I've waited all year on my flowers, and I'm not quite ready to give up the flowers for seeds.

FSH, TX

If you squeeze the base of the flower this will seperate the anthers from the stigma enough to pull them out with tweezers or chopsticks if need be. You don't need to remove them though if your only going to use one set of pollen anthers per tree. Ie, if you take a single set of Ecuador pink anthers and pollinate Butterfly then your okay as long as you don't go to Frosty pink with those same anthers. Otherwise, you will be bringing pollen from Ecuador pink and Butterfly to your Frosty pink. Hence, you may have two possible donors.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks!!! that info helps a bunch!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Eric, that's good to know. I have a hard time separating the anthers sometimes. Just a little note about Ecuador Pink, sometimes if you remove all the anthers, it won't grow a seed pod either. I did a little experiment earlier. Some it doesn't bother like CG, but when I removed the anthers from the versicolors, I got no pods on the ones I did that to.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, so another real dummy question. If I want the pollen from one to put on another, how do I get it without removing the anthers??

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

tiG, I use a little paint brush and remove the pollen from the anthers with the brush. It sticks to the brush and then I hold it over a film canister and tap the brush and the pollen falls into the canister. After removing the pollen I then pollinate the stigma. It works for me.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Snow, that's what I do too, only I use those canisters that MaVie sent to us. They are just right. When I brush the pollen off, some of it will fall onto the corolla, just brush it up too.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Sure wish I had asked for some when MVR offered them. I beg a friend up the road to save me all her film canisters. LOL

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Snow, if u got friends working in the hospital, maybe they got of those empty vials. or perhaps some animal hospital? those syringe containers we bought from an animal supply store, before we found a good source and the price is right. sorry i wish i had some more to spare, but i sent them all out :(!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

That's ok MVR. As long as my friend keeps taking pictures I should have canisters.
