Hardy Butterfly Ginger

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I bought a hardy white BF ginger from The Water Garden Shop http://www.thewatergardenshop.com/harwhitbutgi.html I've had it in my pond all summer & it hasn't bloomed. They say it's hardy to zone 2. Other sources I've seen say zone 7 or 8. How hardy is this? Should I bring it in for the winter?

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

yes, poppysue you should. It is one of the hardest of Hedychiums but only to zone 7. sorry :-(

Dang! That's what I figured. Should I let this go dormant? Do they have rhizome like regular ginger? I wonder if it could be stored like a canna?....

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

yes, they have a rhizome. I don't know how to store them, but I would think it would be the same care given to cannas. Since I don't have to pick mine up, I don't know how to store them. Look for the leaves to start turning yellow, that is the first signs of it going dormant, that is the first signs of some of the gingers I have here that go dormant.
I do hope yours blooms before you tuck it away. Ours start to bloom here in late summer through Nov or first cold snap. The smell of the flower..mmmmmmmm!

Store it like a canna. A light frost will turn the leaves brown, just clip them off. I leave a 6" piece of stem on mine, makes them easier to carry.
