Yippee!!!! I noticed today that I have buds on my Ollie and Dr. Suess! I'm gonna get my first brug flowers yet! I haven't been this excited since my first baby was born. LOL!
So, what to do now, do they need any extra attention or feeding? How long until these little buds will bloom?
Off to take some more pictures of these. Picking the corn is just gonna have to wait a bit longer.
Thank you for sharing my excitement!
I have Buds!!!!!
Congratulations, Joan. Again and again, its very exciting to see the first buds and even more exciting, when they begin to open.
I know just how you feel.....it has been a long time going...glad to see someone as happy as I am...I am sure we both bring a smile to the experts....heheheh. (opps maybe you are a expert..not me....love it..but they make us feel, excited too.....glad you are at the bud stage...now feed, water.....water.....and wait....and look. soon....you will enjoy...plus you did the matching yourself..Birth is great.have fun...post us a picture...Diana ;)
No, I am in no way an expert, these are my first brugs. I've never seen a real live brug blossom, only pictures. The Ollie I started from seed last February, and the Dr. Suess was a cutting from a dear friend here at DG. I am so excited! I'm trying to freeze corn, but I keep running outside to see if they are still okay. LOL! DH called and I told him about it and he said now we have to watch the weather real close so nothing happens to them, because some of their leaves already got ripped up in a wind storm. I think he's even attached to them.
WTG Joan...I knew you could do it.
Wonderful!
Keep all dogs, cats, husbands with ladders etc away for a bit.
Enjoy!!
I know you are enjoying them, but just wait......the best is yet to come. You're gonna love it!! I can tell, she hasn't even seen them bloom and she is hooked. Okay guys, we got another one!!
Yep, I'm hooked alright. These have been my special plants all summer, and I love them! DH is hooked too I think, because when he got home tonight the first thing he did was look at the little buds. LOL! I think he likes them because they are big plants. Big plants seem to appeal to him because he likes the sunflowers best of everything in the yard, and they are like 7 foot tall.
What I really want to know, is how long does it take to go from a tiny bud to bloom? I'm wondering if they will make it before frost.

Joan,Congratulations on your buds. When is your first frost? They are predicting here to be in the 30's Thur. night. If they are small buds it might take a few weeks for them to grow and open.
I hope you make it Joan! I have cut off branches of brugs with lots of buds and put them in water and they bloomed for me, some after weeks. So if they are going to get too cold, you might want to try this as a last ditch method.
They're in pots right? Have you got any of that frost cloth?
what frost cloth Liz??? Inquiring minds want to know and have you used it??
It's a white lightweight cloth that you throw over plants if there is a danger of light frost - supposed to have some insulating factor in it. Will see if I can find a name. It's not as heavy as throwing an old blanket on the plant.
I know you are a happy camper.
Is it something like remay? I wondered if that would work.
Mine seem to take two to three weeks from tiny buds....depending on the variety
remay is white or black? it has that consistancy and weight.
please try to find name. funny i have never seen here in nurseries. I need something like that, I have so many tropicals this year.
thanks Liz!
Kell its called linin you open the closet and grab the frist bed sheet you see and use that. well at least that what I do so what if I have to sleep on the sofa for a few nights minnor problem...lol
I've heard of that stuff Irish. :-)
Liz, my Remay is white and very lightweight. It is used to get a jump start on things in the garden in the spring. Water and light can go through it, but frost doesn't. Supposed to give an added three weeks of growing time.
I got mine at Garden's Alive.
is it just light frost Brugie or can it also help with prolonged cold over several hours?
That's it - works in spring and fall. Even works when you get that very cold rain.
Kell, do a search for Gardens Alive and check on it. I don't remember just what conditions it will cover.
Will do and
Irish.....LOL!! I have a need to make my gardening experience the most expensive possible!! LOL
I'm going to check into that too. I have all my brugs in pots, so if it gets too close to freezing, I can bring them in at night, but this sounds like great stuff for my tomato plants.
Snowhermit, our first frost isn't usually until mid to late September, but this has been such a strange year that anything might happen. Lets hope that we don't get a frost too soon.
