I recently bought seeds for Brugmansia sanquinea to try. Any suggestions on how to start? Some say just plant the seed others say the seed must be soaked in water and the hard outer coat peeled away to expose the "bean" inside? I haven't a clue. Is there a website that will tell me all I need to know without having to post a thousand and one quuestions here? Just thought I would save you all the trouble.:)
Melissa
brug from seed?
hope this url can help u ... http://home.att.net/~perennials/menu.html
Melisa, some of us soak and peel, some of us don't .......
There is plenty of info here without having to go to Vicki's site. If they are really fresh, just soak and plant. Yours may not be, so I would soak and peel, or peel and soak, that's what I do. Plant about 1/4 inch deep and don't overwater. good luck!!!
*lol* tiG. :-)
Melissa, tiG is right. *lol* Your seelings will probably be up in ½-2 months depending on how old the seeds were. Fresh Brugmansia seeds germinate fast. The older seeds can be slow. However, old seeds don`t have to be total impossible. I had some very old ones (maybe over six years seeds) coming up this spring and they are 1 ft. plants now. :-) Good luck with them. :-)
I have seeds from Eric that I got less than 2 weeks ago, and some have been up for a week!!!! another cross is coming now, and keep your fingers crossed for them!
After the seed germinates, does it get potted up and treated as a houseplant until next summer? (Zone5a)
yes celia
Thanx!
Wow, great info, guys! I appreciate it. So here I go to soak and peel and peel and soak. :)
Melissa
Tig,
Those seed were from my multihybrid crosses 2nd generation. Glad to see they are coming up for you already. Those were seed that were bee or moth pollinated from my seedling bed. I was going to toss them as they had unknown pollen donors..ie pollen donating done by moths, but as the only other hybrids around that area were my seedlings I would find it highly improbable that anything other than my seedlings pollinated my seedlings. Are you getting confused yet?
I read that it can take as long as 4 yrs. for brugs from seeds to bloom. Anyone care to elaborate on this??

BTW, MaVie.................that was a lovely site!!! It shouldn't interfere with any of our going ons!

If it takes more than a year for them to bloom I generally toss them. 2-3 years would be the max I would wait for a bloom and 2 years would be too much if you ask me. A lot depends on ones growing conditions though.
Me, too Brugman.........I like instant gratification!!! I might get run over by a locomotive before then!
"eyes"
eyes, all of the seeds I got from Brugman last year have buds or are close.
Eric, the two special crosses you sent are the ones that are up!!
Ahh, well that figures. Let me know if you get any double pinks. Ps, have the true leaves came in yet...any velvety leaves out of that bunch?

I'd toss them if it took 3 years to bloom - OK - if it was a really special one I might wait - really special.
Eric, they are just coming up, the EP cross are almost all up but no true leaves yet, the C. double white cross is just coming up now. I'll keep you up to date with leaves and such! and if there's a double pink in the bunch, everyone will be hearing me scream!
Tig,
Just be sure to share some pics with us all when they bloom.
So from seed it should only take 1 to 2 years. What about rooted cuttings(Thanks, TIG)?
TIG, if you still have it available, I need to get those instructions for the babies you sent me. Thanks.
Melissa
Melissa, I'll send you an email, but it boils down to big pot *3 gallon for what I sent*, miracle grow every 3 days until it gets cool, and lots of light. keep them out of the hottest afternoon sun.
Thank you for the site link MaVie - I learned quite a bit and forwarded it to someone else! You're the best!

we are working on a Brugmansia primer for this site so that people won't have to leave Dave's or search the threads for FAQ's. There will be a link at the top of the page when it's ready.
Tig,
Sounds great. Can't wait to see all this valuable info collected in one place.
well, it's mostly going to be beginners stuff. How to start from seed. How to grow a cutting. How to take a cutting. Winterizing. But it certainly will help.
One or two pictures showing your hand putting some pollen on a stigma as well I hope? Perhaps a picture of each type of seedpod as well? I know, I ask too much.
I wish we would start putting the seedpods in the database. It's a vital part of id and those pictures are as important as flowers. trying to find that old thread of yours about making crosses, a how to.
I'd have to agree as seedpods can range from smooth, velvety, wrinkled or heavily lined, long and skinny, short and fat, round and fat, etc.
As I've been entering pictures in the Brugs database I've also entered the seed pods to those plants if they had any. I'll be putting more in as they mature.
