A couple of people said they were having problems starting cuttings for different swaps.
One of the most basic methods is to fill a plastic container (5") to the top with perlite. Add water until it reaches the top. Dip the cutting in a rooting medium and place in the container. Put them close together if you have lots as they will do better when close. Place under the lights or windowsill.
This is similiar to using a glass of water. Only the perlite is to hold the cutting upright, and to keep the rooting medium near the bottom of the cutting.
Don't cover the cuttings with anything. The water will give off humidity. If the tops look dry, spray mist several times a day. Keep the water level at the top of the container.
A Botany instructor of mine, Sister Mary Joy Heywood, teaches this method and it works for many plants.
Preparing cuttings for trade
I had some luck with perlite, but better luck with vermiculite.
Yes. I don't know why I didn't do this - I have always had success before using just plain water - or, I could have used water absorbing crystals, they work like a dream, but I didn't think of it this time.
Hi Azalea, never thought of using water absorbing crystals. Thanks for the tip!
