Common name: Umbrella Plant
Family: Cyperaceae
Genus: Cyperus
Species alternifolius
I love these - it's also called Papyrus.
Can the umbrella papyrus winter over in zone 7, Chesapeake VA t5o be exact.
Mine do, I have the tall ones - up to 5 ft . I bought some of the mini ones, about 18", they didn't make it. I am in 7b, which is warmer than VA
Hi Wisenbaker! Welcome to DG :) The Umbrella Palm is only hardy to zone 8. You probably ought to bring it in.
beautiful plant. will use this @ new home in Lk. Placid --zone 9. Have you seen a similar plant but thin stems &fluffier top. almost like a milkweed fluff Saw one in Naples, Fld. but no one knew the name.
Terry, Dave, anybody, why is there no blue link to the PDB below the name at the beginning of the thread? There usually is.
Ulrich, It's because this picture was added before Dave had incorporated the link back to the PDB into the forum. This picture is an oldie ;o)
Will the Umbrella Plant (Cyperus alternifolius) grow well in the ground suppported with a drip system adjacient to a chlorinated pond ?? They do well in fish ponds in our area (Oro Valley Az.)
Yes, I have mine in full sun by my rose garden - no water feature at all, it gets about 6-6 ft tall. Iused to have a grat pic of it, but lost it when my computer crashed.
Mine too, PJ, and I have transplanted and moved it to a new location in a dormant state, and now it's huge! No water feature, just water hose and plenty of sunshine. It overwinters in the ground just fine. Zone 7B here.
