This is my largest seed pod so far and measures 15" long.
DrD whopper
Weird - this is the first time I haven't been able to enlarge.
It worked for me. I need to go measure my versicolor pod. I have one on EP that's huge and one on Versi orange that's pretty big.
Worked for me. Whopper!
Versicolors have the longest seedpods. Thats for sure, but Dr.D is no pure versicolor.
That might explain it. This one was pollinated with V. Peach as it was all I had blooming at the time.
If memory serves me correctly V.Peach as a pollen donor throws out a few whites.
This is really big . . . how many seeds do you think?
My, that is a big pod. What are you guys all doing? Injecting with growth hormones? :-)
How do you get your brug to produce seeds?
Wind, you have to hand pollinate with pollen from another variety. When you see the postings wanting pollen, that's what it's for. Example: Cross Frosty Pink to Ecuador Pink or Charles Grimaldi, Jean Pasco to Ecuador Pink or Charles GRimaldi, etc. Try not to use white, since you will get mostly white seedlings.
When you cross pollenate do they both have to be blooming or just one blooming and rub the pod of the other one with the flower of the one blooming??? I hope I said that right.
They both have to be blooming. You take pollen from the staymens of one and put on the stigma of another. You can save pollen in the fridge or freezer for several weeks.
Oh wow I had no idea, thank you so much.
In other words, they don't have to be blooming at the same time - you can take the pollen from the fridge and pollinated another plant later when it blooms.
No Liz, she said that they both have to be blooming but if you wanted to cross pollenate one with the other you would have the pollen for it.
If I am understanding you right...your saying is that they don't have to be blooming in order to cross pollenate? What if it's just a single can you cut it to?
What they are saying is that ,say, your frosty pink is blooming now,but your CG had buds that won't open for a few weeks.Take some pollen from the FP ,wrap it up and store it in the fridge.
When CG blooms you take the pollen out of the fridge and pollinate CG with the stored FP pollen....
Did I explain that OK?
Both have to bloom - they just don't have to bloom at the same time. Say you have a Frosty pink blooming today - you can take a Q-tip or an artist's brush and take some pollen from it. Then you put the pollen in the fridge in a labelled baggie. Next week you have a (anything)say, insignis pink blooming. You go to your fridge, take out the pollen of the Frosty pink, bring it to room temperature, and dab it on the stigma of the insignis pink. Do it early in the morning or late - just when it's not the heat of the day. That's it.
And before everyone jumps on me - I am not recommending this cross. LOL
me either...just examples,huh Liz?
Boy is this a thread or what? lol. I've got it now.
How sweet Liz, thinking of me and filling my pepto garden!!
true love
Just doing my bit Kell to keep San Leandro pink.
and much appreciated Liz!!
You can store pollen in the freezer for much longer than weeks. I've only stored mine for about a year though as even if we get a freeze I like to replace my pollen with fresh pollen just because I can. I believe others have stored their pollen for longer than a year though in the freezer.
