I won! I won! I won!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I just won the top prize raffle item in the Idaho Water Garden and Koi Society, 9th annual, 2002 Koi Show! This prize was a Doitsu Showa Koi that was valued at $650. I am so happy that I thought I would burst out crying all the way home. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I could win a fish such as this with only buying one raffle ticket but I did. Life is grrrrreeeeaaaaattttt!!!!!! Lani

edited to show that the fish was valued at $650 not the $550 that I thought before.

Thank you all for your messages of congratulations. I don't have a camera right now though. Lost it off the roof of the truck a while back. So go to the hyperlink that Badseed posted and look at the second page Doitsu Showa and you will see a fish remarkably similar to the one that I won. Thanks BS for doing that hyperlink for us. Had quite a weekend, the 3 koi I showed gota first, a second and a third and the fancy telescope goldfish I showed got a second also. Then my water feature tied for first (peoples choice award) and DH and I got awards for volunteerism from the club. Had a very fine weekend. Smiling all the time right now. Lani

No problem Lani. I am so proud of you!! Personally I had to see what a five hundred dollar fish looked like. Bummer, they were fresh out of those and only had thousand dollar and up fish! LOL Will your fishes value go up as it grows?? From what I have seen, the bigger they are, the higher the price tag. Congrats again girlfriend!!!

Lewiston, ID(Zone 5b)

Many, many congrats!!

Yes the value goes up greatly as it gets bigger and the color gets more set in the fish. To me that value is great because I can breed this guy/gal to one of the babies that I got from the Japanese koi that are boarding with me for the summer. If I beat the (@)($@*@#)# Great Blue Heron to those babies and can save a few of the best, that is. Someday I hope to have some really fine fish here from the start that I am getting this summer. I am still on cloud 19 or maybe even 35. LOL For those of you who don't know I have the unique ability to dig a mud bottom pond almost anyplace on our property and raise fish in them. The ground water is that high here! And yes we DO have a mosquito problem but the baby fish love to eat those.

I went out and fed the fish this morning and had a thrill upon seeing "Lucky" come up to eat. He/she is just gorgeous! Hope DS will come soon with his camera so I can get a link for you to see this fish. I had already named this fish Lucky when I got home with the bag it came in. So Sue, you get the prize for naming the fish after he/she was already named. Want a water lily? giggle

Happy Bday Lani!

What happened with your fish???
-Kim

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Thanks Kim for the Bday message. My fish grew and grew and grew and this spring a osprey flew off with her. :( I love osprey but not when they love my fish. At least we got some really nice babies out of her growing up out there. I can hardly wait to show one of those probably at next years show.

The osprey got three of my best fish out in the breeder pond so finally my DH is going to build a cover for that pond. He didn't believe me when I told him I had watched it fly off with a 12 inch fish from our natural pond but now he believes.

Ah well I have babies and they are going to be great. Ten of them are just super looking young ones so time will tell if they are as good as their Mom.

OMG!...sorry about your fish!...I was bombarded by one of my giant bullfrogs one day on the ground after something dropped from the sky pretty much right above me...I looked up and it was a red tailed hawk flying away...the frog landed about 5 feet from me in my backyard with a terrible THUD!...upside down and bleeding...he died in my hands and he was SUCH a friendly froggie!...he would ribbit/croak/sing at night SO NICE to his lady frogs......I could NOT believe my eyes...so...I know what you mean that you're not believed when you tell someone a story like that...my father and my friends told me I was seeing things!...they did NOT believe me about the hawk or it having had my frog...sorry again about your beautiful fish!...

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

SusanaLyn,

We have hawks and osprey all the time taking our bullfrogs and fish from our natural half acre pond. This year I lost four of my top breeder and show fish from our breeder pond so won't put any more valuable fish out there till I get a frame with netting on it put up out there. I love the birds but when they steal MY fish it means I need to do something to keep them out. This means WAR!

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. That fish was incredible and growing into such a huge fish it was hard for me to believe that an osprey could carry it away but it did along with three others of my big fish and countless young ones. The best of my fish are now in my lined koi pond in the side yard that has fish line strung high over it to keep the birds from diving.
