How difficult will it be to grow some water lettuce at my new apartment?? Sledder has volunteered to share some of hers with me, and I'm wondering if anybody who lives in my zone has grown it before, and what care requirements I should be aware of ...
Thanks,
-Jennifer
water lettuce in 7b?
Angel...I overwinter mine in a small pond and cover it with polyethelene and it survives winter here in Alabama!
seedpicker, Have U overwintered any Water Hyacinths? I hate to lose mine. I haven't had very good luck with the water lettuce. I don't know where U are in Alabama but we are only 2 miles from the Alabama line close to Hartford. Our weather should be about the same.
Sugar...yep! They survived last winter with the poly even with snow and ice!
I live opposite to Columbus,ga... east central al!
do you take the poly off except when it's going to freeze?
Seepicker, I have had 2 people send me water lettuce & I can't seem to get it to survive the trip. I'm sure it looked good when they sent it. I have better luck with water hyacinths. I may try that this winter. Now do U mean the sheets like glass or the heavy film like tarps?
Sugar
tiG...only take it off when the days are warmer than usual and cover back at nite...they will die back and be very small like 2-3 inches, They even multiplied during winter! I could not believe it!
Sugar...it is the plastic poly, you can buy at walmart or lowe's... I have some extra water lettuce taking over pond if you want to try some more! LMK
Do you have fish in the pond, and (if so) do you run your pump or an air stone to provide oxygen to them? (The wheels are starting to turn...)
go_vols...yes I have fish and run my pumps all winter too!
Seedpicker send me your address in the mail & I'll send U the postage.
Do U save water hyacinths the same way?
Thanks,
Sugar
Sugar...yes the hyacinths will be okay too! I had so many during spring I mailed alot to other traders just to get rid of them!
Picker I received Water Hyacinths from 2 people & they were different types. One was smaller & has round bulbs (for lack of a better word) The other was longated & much larger, longer leaves. I read where there was 7 different kinds.
Put us on your trade list for next spring in case ours don't make it. I don't need any now.
THEN AGAIN I just received this as I was writting you ....
"Light, crowding and water quality have a lot to do with the shape of hyacinth, they can be short and compact with big round leaves or 3 feet tall and leggy with elongated leaves and be from the same mother plant,if raised in different environments."
What is your experience on this?
Sugar
