Horticultural oils, Ultra Fine is one brand. They are great for killing mites and soft bodied insects by smothering them but can sometimes cause phytotoxicity(burn the leaves).
UT Ag station in McMinnville is doing experiments with soybean oil. It's supposed to have insect supressing as well as fungicidal properties. I'll keep you posted on the research.
They are also researching antifungal properties of monarda. It was interesting to see how the different varieties had different antifungal compounds.
Hort Oil
thanks! is Neem oil considered safer than UF?? for leaf burn I mean?
Ok thanks so where to buy this stuff?
I had about 4 brugs out of all of them that had terrible leave burn this morning. the rest look fine, but guess what???????? it didn't kill the little worms, it just drove them out. I tried to take care of all I found, and used Bt.
Cala,
Please do keep us update of the soybean oil. I was wondering if plain old veggie oil would work....a little bit in water. Whats your thoughts on that?
Glory, I've heard of others doing it, just never got brave enough to try.
TiG, yes, neem is safer, don't mix it too strong, remember to use warm water to mix with and don't whatever you do, spray it in the hot part of the day!! I wait till the evening because neem is toxic to honeybees.
Cala,
I'm going to try the Veggie oil on a few of the extras I have around here...I'll let you know how it worked. Do you think 1/4 teaspoon is to much for a windex spray bottle?
Glory, that sounds about right.
