found part of my problem

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well Cala told MaVie a long time ago that it was tiny caterpillars (or worms) that hatched inside the buds that was our problem. Well, I sprayed today with Ultra Fine, hadn't used this before. After a couple of hours, I was out taking off old leaves and such, and noticed tiny worm/cats coming out of the tops of some of mine. Not all, just a few plants, but still, I'd never seen these before. and they were coming out of the very top of the plant. Hopefully all the buds I have now will stay, it's getting late in the year, and though it hasn't cooled off yet, the nights are a bit cooler.
How often can you use Ultra Fine, and if I've seen these once, should I spray again soon??

Hamilton, Canada

TiG,
I've been picking those little critters out first thing every morning along with earwigs and now spiders.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

joydie, these aren't the brown ones you can see, or even the all green ones I had earlier. I get those too every morning, and it does get old. These were tiny, teeny tiny, and I tell you, I've examined every speck of my brugs, and have never seen these. I can only figure they were inside a bud or leaf or something, and the Ultra Fine drove them out.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, dipel will work too and is a bit residual. Be careful with the Ultrafine oil, but glad you finally found the problem. Something ate a big bud off Enchanted White last night, I was so mad!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

should I not use it again?? If I lose all these tiny buds cause of it, I'll scream again!!!!!!!!! LOL!
is there a brand name for dipel??

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

it's Bt, Dipel is the name it's sold under here.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

gotcha, thanks

Glad you found the problem Tig. Be sure to spray those cuttings as well just to be on the safe side. If I notice an infestation of any sort on a brug I tend to go and spray all of my brugs just to be safe. Bayer Brand systemic rose insecticide generally works great for me. But in your case a spray was definitly in order.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

for little wormeys I use BT. I mix up a gallon in a hand sprayer and as soon as I see damage I spray where the damage is. It works great!!! I also keep the same gallon for weeks and its seems to work fine even though diluted for so long. I have lots of wave petunias so I am quick to spray at the first sign of eating but I never have to do the entire plant if I am johnny on th spot before it spreads. I notice they like to eat the brand new brug leaves on the very end of the branches. A few squeezes on the trigger and they are gone.
I use neem oil or ultrafine on my roses to discourage mildew. It suffocates so maybe the thingies abandoning ship on Tiggle's plants were gasping for air!

She has a way with words doesn't she?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

not to mention how smart she is!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I guess this proves that BT can go bad, kell. I used the Bt I had last week or so, and nothing happened, so I'll pick up a new bottle tomorrow.

(Zone 8a)

I found some kind of small funky looking bugs chopping off my buds and I sprayed with malathion (did I spell that right?) because it is close to my pond and wouldn't hurt fish...haven't seen them since!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

i do not know tiGems, mine is a few years old in the bottle but only weeks mixed in the sprayer. I wonder if the wormies are too far down in the bud to even know you are using BT on them!!! Ultrafine oil would seal them up I would think..which may flush them out........ i think BT works by having the spray where they eat. where is Ma Vie when you need her?? So maybe it works best on outside wormies............ munch munch

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

tiGems?? LOL!!! you're gonna run out of them soon!! I used freshly mixed Bt, but they might have been too deep.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I like to read her replies just to see what new names she has come up with.

tiG, so glad you found the problem. I hope now you will get lots of buds and flowers. When the northern Brugs are all sleeping for the winter we're going to need to see pictures of the southern beauties so we won't go through withdrawl.

Slice and Dice??? Has a nice ring to it doesn't it? I have to admit though, I've been using Arlene's method of cut and stick!! I took cuttings yesterday and just stuck them in a pot of potting mix.(I even used clippers to take the cuttings!! what is this world coming to) We will see!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

gee I do not know Cala, cut and stick does not have the same ring to it!! Hi Cut and Stick! Hi Slice and Dice! See what I mean. I guess we could call you Stick!!! Cut would be a little too weird.

Arlene's way works! Try it you will love it! and the best part is the cutting is already in dirt so you do not have to shake it all up getting the sand off and repotting it up in soil. I have always used clippers.......what did you use? well actually I have been known to just snap off the piece...............but never with my teeth at least with brugs! LOL!
Now you know how us lazy gardeners garden!

Kell, the scientist in me is rebelling big time, but the gardener in me loves it!! I took more cuttings today, with the clippers!!(I was good though, I dipped them in hormone and stuck them in steril cups of vermiculite) The Belotii and Edulus passifloras I stuck in pots of dirt are starting to root. I just chopped them off and stuck them. Hee hee, this is fun!! Slice and Dice aka Cala

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Slice and Dice aka Cala

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, I found a seedpod today. Guess what? It didn't have a slice in the side and it was ripe!! Can you believe I actually missed one?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Cala, watch out you may lose your new moniker!!!
