Why do seed pods drop before maturing.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Every cross I tried on Ecuador Pink resulted in the formation of a seedpod and then in a week or so it fell off the plant. Does anyone have any ideas as how to keep this from happening?

FSH, TX

Have you tried superglue?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

bwakkkkkkkk!!!! Eric, sounds like you're back to your old self!!! LOL!!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Eric,I enjoyed the joke but HELP!!!!!

I'm wondering if its the heat that does it. Since like tomatoes they are members of the night shade family I know that tomato buds will fall off when it is too hot. The plant will then recover and set more flowers when the weather is cooler.

Joydie1,
I'd have to admit that I loose many more seedpods during the mid summer than I do in the spring and fall. Too much heat and not enough water could be your culprits. A lot seems to depend on how big the seedpods are as well. Or should I say how strong the peduncle is. Once its gotten a bit fibrous then its going to take some yanking to get that seedpod off. That or a sharp twist or break. Of course if you wait until the pod turns yellow it just kind of melts in your hand.

I've lost so many pods this summer. I've tried to make sure they have enough water, but seems like every time they get a bit dry(not even enough to wilt) they lose pods.

Barb,
Me too....they keep fall off left and right.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Ecuador Pink seems really bad about dropping pods this year. I think I might try Eric's Elmer's glue method.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Cala, i think i will too! this thread makes me feel better. when they fall off i figure the pollen didn't take!!!! crossing fingers, i might have one that i did that has taken.

(Zone 6a)

Wondering if anyone has tried alkaline vs. acidic soil to see if there is a difference in seedpod success?? Just a thought:)

I pollinated several flowers on an EP and only one is forming a pod with DrD being the father. My other EP I pollinated with Butterfly and will know in a week or two if it took. Not having very good luck either with EP being a good seed setter.

How about trying that special stuff Ortho makes for Tomatoes to prevent blossom drop - can't think of the name of it.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

PJ, I think you're on to something, for me anyway. maybe I can get out to the store tonight. Are you losing buds or is it just me? not seedpods, buds.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Lol- no buds to lose!!! That's not all together true - I do have 7 blooms on that Isaella you gave me from Eric. I put it on the hill by the pool.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, I thought I wasn't getting buds either, but I am, it's just that they are still falling off at about 1/4" or littler.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

No - I inspect mine every day - none yet even on my "ol Yaller", but it has several Y's now. I still have the one seed pod on the big VG white from Arlene tho. It doesn't seem to be growing - it stays about 3 inches long.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Tried some of the tomato set yesterday. Will see if it helps.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

are you having this problem too Barbara??? cause all I keep seeing is your blooms!!! I do have C. double white blooming, so something is right, just 199 others are dropping buds. I have to make a trip out tonight!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i am losing some buds too, some small, some larger, but not all of them. i'd like to know why all my tendrils are twisted!!!!! i think that tomato set was a great idea!!! Azalea, don't think i ever told you, Kirk was awfully impressed with you.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

I get flowers but when I pollinate it seems to take but within a week, the stem and newly developing seedpod drop off.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

LOl - Why??? Must have been my "loading" expertise, and the original type topper on the truck, Lol!! He's a good guy!

Anyone tried epsom salts to see if that will help prevent the blossom drop? Just another silly thought:)

Owen

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

nothing is silly at this point owen. is it used for that?

(Zone 6a)

It is recommended for tomatoes and peppers, which are in the same family I understand. By the way, I am going to send you a few seeds from my 5 most favorite tomatoes, Tig.

owen, you're sweet after all!! LOL!! :)

Just thinking here, but I have to put this in as well. Besides the heat, bugs, etc...I have found that seedpods seem to form a bit more readily on my specimens once they get a bit larger. Ie, first buds aren't always the best for setting seeds save on seedlings.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I had no problems so far with EP. When pollinated with RK, the seed pod grew quite fast. The other seed pod, pollinated with Esmeraldas, was knocked off by mistake from me. I always peek into dropped off pods and often there were no or only little seeds in them. I rhink its a question of sucsessful pollination.

(Zone 6a)

Thanks Tig....same to you:) You have e-mail.

Monika, I do that too, I peek inside dropped pods. Sometimes the little fallen ones have rows of immature seeds though. I think it's our 90* heat.
Just thought of this Owen, I'm losing pods from plants in the ground as well as ones in big pots in Pro-Mix.

If I was to bet on any one reason....it would be the week after week of 90+ deg. temperatures this summer. But who knows for sure:)

I have not had any pods to lose, but I have had small blossom buds dropping this summer.

Owen

I also look in the dropped pods. x candida has up till now been empty. Oh I forgot, - i also knock pods of the plants. *lol* Ocre x Apricot Queen broke yesterday. There was over 200 seeds in it on the size of Poppy seeds.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

ack!!! Tonny!!! oh no.......

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Calla,I thought you only peeked in pods that were growing...LOL

FSH, TX

Tonny,
I've had empty seedpods and pods with triple chambers full of seeds as well. Still, during the hottest part of the summer I lose more buds and potential seedpods than at any other time of year. Whether this is due to the heat making poor pollen or to the heat weakening the peduncle connection or a combination of factors....You could easily test the poor pollen theory by placing frozen fluffy pollen collected in spring or fall on the flowers in the hottest part of the day. I should note that Brugmansia in full direct sun seem to be the most prone to drop flowers, buds, and potential seedpods in the mid summer. Those in indirect sun for the at least a few hours each day seem to hold flowers, buds, and pods a bit better. I have set seedpods year round in Florida as we don't always have a freezing spell.
As for the epsom salt or bloom set...I think I am going to give that a try as well. Anything is worth a shot I say.

Hamilton, Canada

Owen I've been using the epsom salts with the Miracle Grow Super every time I water. I still had tiny little buds turn brown and drop. Now that the weather is much cooler the suaveolens brug is putting out my buds, but not the sang x sang.
