A complete failure

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

This double is a complete failure. While the outer skirt is drying, continues the inner skirt to grow.

Super slender and very healthy green...but definitly not a flattering picture.

Wish my failures looked that good. LOL

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It stands at my sisters place, Jeanne. She lives at a lower elevation with a better climate. Its the last chance before being composted in the fall.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Monika seems like the doubles are a tricky bunch. :-)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

They are indeed tricky, Kyle. When you remove farther from the classic cross aurea x versicolor, the risk of crippled double flowers is increasing. Skill is needed to keep those genes in balance.

I vote to have Monika send her 'failures' over here...lol. One person's junk is another's dream.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Monika . . no doubt you have learned a lot not only from your successes but also from your failures. I know it is disappointing but you have so many beautiful successes that I can not even begin to count them all and I know that you will have many more.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Maybe if I slip down to Herbstein I can raid the compost bin, and take that failure with me, then I'll gladly send you all cuttings from it..... for a small price, of course!

Wintermoor

Now that sounds like a plan Wintermoor. ;)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

and while you are at it Wintermoor slip over the wall and give Monika a great big kiss and hug from all of us for sharing all her creations with us!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

If only my failures looked that good!! Actually only a couple of "my" seeds have bloomed this year. I hope to have more next year.

Monika,
I don't know a lot about hybridizing, but what if you crossed it with another double to see if it would improve? If not could you explain to me why not?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I could do that, joydie and with the right partner, it might be able to correct this fault. But now, I have many valuable doubles, I could use for crossing, that there is no need for this one. Fandango and Anouschka are much more valuable. Both will be crossed to Apricot Queen.

Monika,
Okay I understand now. So if it was crossed with another flora plena would it almost be a pure flora plena and are there such plants growing?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

You have to expect deformed flowers. I have another but new hybrid which is even worse. The outer skirt is as green as the calyx and looks like too hot washed nylons.

I can't even picture that! LOL
