Tilt-a-Whirl?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Is this Tilt-a-Whirl? It didn't have a tag with it.

Sure looks like it. Mine has very crisp leaves and looks like someone took pinking shears to the edges. I think mine are a little more colored, but again color depends on soil and light. I'd say this is Tilt A Whirl.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I thought that's what it looked like. Lupinelover gave me a tiny piece that's rooted now but it seems to have a bit more pink on it. I think I read somewhere that there are two color versions of TAW.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

Mine has more orange and maroon in it. Neat variety.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

It is one of the round-leafed coleus, of which, to my knowledge, there are only four, but it isn't Tilt-a-Whirl (which is one of my very favorites). It is a much cooler one that I just discovered called Kaleidoscope. You can see a picture of it at the Singing Springs Nursery site.

How did you ever find it?

Would you consider trading a piece for some other coleus (like Tilt-a-whirl)? or perhaps we could trade a group?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have lots of coleus. I could trade.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala theres several sports of tilt-a-whirl out there..the foliage is TAW but the color is a little different.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Eclipse, I didn't think it was the one I'd seen at the OFA convention, but knew that the foliage was "odd".

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Cala, if that is the one from me from the plant swap, it is kaleidoscope. Came from a plant show last spring. The lady had about nine differeent varieties, and dumb me only got a few.

Roz,
I'd like a cutting or two of this one.....Please.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala, do you want me to send you a cutting of my Tilt A Whirl? Can do that, but have to tell you that I don't have Gold Giant after all. Found the tag, but the plant isn't there.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Glory, the only problem is that after the plant swap, I left the other coleus in the gh until I could plant, and they all died. I do have a good many others that I'd like you to see, cause I don't think I've seen them, but I don't know what they are. Duckfoot, for one, though, that I am rooting for you. I think they were attacked by white fly, as they were only small cuttings and guess they just could not make it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just cannot stand it!!! I cannot stand Dave's anymore!!!!!! I cannot take it! My marriage can't either!!I had done coleus 20 years ago and decided I was on to other things. Then the tiGger does a swap and I decide I want to be part of that fun group, and I go out and buy some but am still on the fence. And now I see this one and go to the link on this thread and now I am SO VERY intrigued again. Hey guys, my yard is only so big!!! As if I will have anyplace for my DH here anymore between the brugs, the datura, the mgs, the coleus and my old obsessions!! Good thing my DS left 2 yearsago. I still do not I know how to break it to him that he can't come back at Christmas for his room will be full of brugs!!

Roz,
That's fine....I'm sure someone will take pity on us and keep us in mind when taking cuttings. :0)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Glory and Roz,

I have lots of rooted cuttings I can send you if you want some. Most have names, but some do not. Let me know. Be glad to share.

S,
That would be great with me...how about you Roz?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I have a lot of new ones too, when they grow a bit I'll take pictures and cuttings.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Wait! .... is everyone saying that they have lots of different round-leafed coleus, like Tilt-a-Whirl and Kaleidoscope!? If so, count me in.

I love my Tilt-a-Whirls, and I have only been able to find out about three other round-leafed coleus, and I can't get them locally. So, if all of you have lots of round-leafed ones, that I've never heard of .... first, I'll faint, then I'll start begging.

Hamilton, Canada

Oh we need to get Rik to peek at the brug forum. One can't have coleus without brugs and cannas and hibiscus and morning glories and lots of vines and.....oh yeah hibiscus and, and, and, and, and....I guess I'm going to have to take Rik's hand and drag him gently to the brug forum, "Come on Rik, ova here:::::::::::::::> Brugmansia and Friends."

Kyle has me revamping my tropical beds in my sleep most nights, making mental notes of what to put where. Last night I dug another bed in my sleep and filled in with more floors. I woke up exhausted...LOL. Everytime I think ok that's it I'm done now he posts something more lushous than before. Now my neighbour told me today my front beds look as lovely as PARK GARDENS.

OH I'M SO EXCITED. I saw some wrought iron fencing that is going to be thrown out. Its a MESS, completely covered in rust and blistered paint. I'd have to rent or borrow a grinder to clean it up and repaint it. It would be tons of work, but I'm thinking that no Victorian garden would be complete without wrought iron fencing. If I keep extending my front tropical beds in my sleep I won't have the energy to work on the fencing...LOL.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, I agree with you.DG is a dangerous place. I used to collect daylilies(600 and counting) but need those areas for the tropical beds that I just have to have next year. I collected coleus before DG but when I came here, there were new ones I just had to have and generous gardeners who were happy to share!! Guess the hostas are safe for now, not many tropicals grow in the shade.(except a few gingers, but don't have too many of those yet)
Roz and Glory, I'll be happy to share with you guys, I have bunches. I finally gave up and sprayed the danged mealybugs with Orthene. The organics just weren't getting them. Honestly I think the bugs would eat the pyrethrum and raise up on their back legs and say "Is that all you've got? hit me again!!!"
Oh yeah, then there is "that" forum, you know(whispering)"the brug forum".

Cala,
Thanks for the info on the Mealy Bugs...I think I have Orthene.
Brugie has already offered us some coleus....thanks anyway.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'll TRY to get some of my mailing done tomorrow and Tuesday. Will let you know when they go out.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes Cala, that is the word DANGEROUS DAVE'S!!
Well, next year I definitely will have a coleus bed! Small but there!! I just do not know how I am going to winter over everything. I really am fantasizing putting in a home done cheap greenhouse in the middle of my lawn. I could toss the plastic and save the wood for next year. I just do not know how to tell my husband this! and to think I tore down a greenhouse when I moved to this house............

S.
No rush..if you want just send one box of coleus and I'll share with Roz.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Glory, if you guys see each other often, I can do that, but it isn't a problem mailing to you both. I'll stick your Bluebird ROS in too. I'm going to try to get organized so I can get a bunch of things mailed out tomorrow. By the way, Ollie finally has buds. Still waiting on Whisker X ? It is really tall. Thanks.

S,
No problem....Roz lives in the next town...very close.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Okay, I'll just mail them all to you. Thanks.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Glory, I do have one type of coleus that has the rounded looking leaves, and several other varieties, and I will check with my neighbor to see if she got any Kaleidoscope since she went with me last spring. Don't worry about getting any for me; I have several varieties and I like the different colors - probably don't need any more.

Shirley,
Hold off on the coleus...let me check and see what Roz has and what she can find here. These is no sense in you having to mail a box of things when I can get them from right here.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Okay, will wait to hear from you via email.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

I got a pretty round leaf one at the Fl Swap too - it was from Marie. She had it labled Harlequin, it has little more red in it than this one but I haven't seen it on the Coleus sites. It's one of my favorites now.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've seen another one named Harlequin. I got the same one, and I love it too. I think it's Kaleiscope, check out some of the links that have been posted. I saw it somewhere.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Azalea,

Here's the only online pic of Kaleidoscope I know of http://www.singingspringsnursery.com/560.jpg (pic from Singing Springs Nursery). It might show a little more red than the picture above, but that varies from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant.

I can't find a coleus "Harlequin," even at Joydie's British site, though it is a good descriptive name for Kaleidoscope.

The four round-leafed coleus I know of are Flirtin' Skirts, Diane's Gold, Kaleidoscope and Tilt-a-Whirl. If anyone knows of any others, pleeease let me know. I love these! (Well, I'm not crazy about Flirtin' Skirts, but it's nice to have complete sets, and the others .... !!)

Does anyone have Diane's Gold?? http://207.89.182.149/downer/k_dianes.jpg (pic from Glasshouse Works).

------------------

[BTW -- I'm having email issues; so, if you have written me, I may not be able to answer right away. I might be able to access tonight or tomorrow.]

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I bought Harlequin from Glassworks, it's nice. I have what matches the picture of Kaleidoscope. if you don't get it in the secret trade or from Cala (who has some really cool coleus), write me.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks a lot, tiG. I'll let you know after I get my secret trade (holding my breath).

Glasshouse must not have their whole catalog online, because they don't show anything named Harlequin on their site.

Hamilton, Canada

Diane's Gold is another nice one Rik. I just love the ones with the vibrant yellows and lime greens. I wonder which one this is a sport from.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I had Dianes Gold last year, but it's one of the ones I lost. There is a coleus breeder in NC. He has a huge list, but don't think he has a website. I might be able to get his number. (I used to have a catalog, but think I tossed it)

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Too bad you lost yours, Cala. I'd appreciate the contact in NC if you can find it.

Meanwhile, I found another cool picture of it (more lime for Joydie -- I like more yellow): http://uga.ovationsoftware.com/SummerTrials/2001/charts/Coleus_(solenos_3138.jpg

Hamilton, Canada

Rik,
I saw that one. Do you have Wild Lime? I have that one also.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes, I just got Wild Lime last week. Want me to start you a cutting, or do you already have it?
