Is that it?

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

I know I've had a couple of problems with my Brug plant, and it may be stressed up to the top leaves, due to bits breaking off, being bent over in a storm etc., but now I have this big plant (five feet tall)from which I got 4 blooms which lasted for three days, then withered and fell off.

What happens now, does it sing??? lol

It will probably get bigger, but will it give more flowers next year, or just bloom for three days in the year, and then just be big green leaves, as caterpillar fodder?

BTW.... thank you to SNOWHERMIT & OBLAMBERT for the tips about replanting the broken off part, it worked a treat. After our flood, another bit broke off, which I sliced in two, and repotted, they are also now growing, so next year I'm going to have four big green triffids standing about in my wee yard, which only bloom for three days. Seems to me like so much plant for so few flowers.

All the best

Wintermoor

Hang on it will bloom again....some of mine have bloomed 6-7 times this year...a couple have never stopped blooming.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Ok I'll wait, thanks Glory.

Well I've just been outside and still nothing has happened.

How long do you think I should wait?

LOL Wintermoor, You should feel lucky. I have 6 brugs left after some committed suicide, two died from an overdose of love (fertilizer?) and of those 6 I have not had ANY blooms yet. LOL Three of them I even babied all through last winter. Keep watching for your blooms and maybe you will have some more before I get my first one. ;] Lani

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

OK Lani..... the race is on!!!

Lol

*checking for blooms* ;-)

Wintermoor, I'm sure if you don't run out of warm weather you will get more blooms. In a few weeks my growing season will be over so unless my plants have big buds on them I won't see them bloom this year. Next year your plant will grow much bigger and should have lots more blooms on it.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Snow, wont they bloom in the GH? Please tell me YES cause I have alot of small buds and I gotta see them bloom!

When I dig them out of the ground do the plants go thru a transplant shock?Loose all the leaves and buds? How can I minimize it?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

CC, Yes they will bloom in the GH. Have a pot all ready when you dig them up and water well after you pot them up. Mist the plant for a few days and they should be fine. I woulds also take the bottom leaves off.I will bring a few into the GH that have buds but most are very tall and won't fit in there.Sure wish my growing season was longer. I've got lots I haven't seen bloom yet. :(

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I have at least 6 with buds right now,and one of Monikas Vesi X is Y ing,(its only 3 feet tall) .No buds yet but I'm hopeful I can get some blooms on it before frost.....

I'm kinda tired of my same old brugs blooming,I have all kinds of cuttings and seedlings growing ,wanna see something new.I love my old ones but .......

Calla brought me a Whiskers cutting and that has a bud.It sitting where I can't miss the show...soooo excited!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I don't have a GH so mine must make it outside. The desert wind and dry climate hasn't been really kind on these plants and then I read about everybody fertilizing them every three days or so so I started that and killed the two. I now am just watering them daily and fertilizing weekly with my regular bloom booster. Praying for blooms lol

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Last year I didn't have a GH and mine still bloomed in the living room and bathroom till Thanksgiving...so don't give up.
I'm just worried about disrupting the root system when I dig them, last year I left them in pots

CC, I've moved lots of big brugs into pots while they were flowering and never had a problem. Just keep them well watered and do it in the evening when it's cooler.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

It gets pretty cold here in winter, so should I move the triffids indoors, or can I cut them back and cover them till the snow, ice, frost, and whatever else the winter sends us, is over?

Where do all of you good people hide your brugs in the cold, cold winter?

*shiver*

Wintermoor

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

How can you shiver in zone 9.......

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

I didn't mean I shiver, but the brugs, although I must admit, I hate cold weather, and have a good shiver now and then in late winter.
I have though, that archetypal Scottish liquid remedy for any disease known to man, (except a cold) ;-)

*brrrr*

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Wintermoor, Brugmansia do not survive german winters. Even in the mild climate around Freiburg, they have no chance outside.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Ok, then I'll have to bring them indoors.

Will it not be too hot in the house, or too dark in the cellar?

Where's the best place for them?

Wintermoor

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It doesnt matter, as long as it is frost free. Young plants should have it a bit warmer (about 12°C - 15°C) and more light as older plants.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Thanks Monika, I should be able to put the big one in a cellar, and the three wee ones in the house.
I had some breakage during a storm here, and cut up and replanted the bits, and they are all growing again.

Looks like I'm going to have a Brug Park in my area soon ;-)

They'll all be white though :-(

All the best

Wintermoor

p.s. What do you do with all of yours in the winter, it must freeze in Herbstein too, doesn't it?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It freezes very good here in Herbstein. Temp. below -10°C are normal. I have all my plants in a Greenhouse with double acryl glass (Anlehnhaus mit 16mmm Doppelstegplatten).
It is kept frost free with a electric heater, especially for Greenhouses. Sensitive plants as versicolors get a special treatment. They have ' warm ' feet and a cool head.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Oh you lucky devil.....

Mines is supposed to be versicolor...... do I keep the pot in the house and stick his head out of the window ;-)

*oh no*

Wintermoor

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Glad to see you Wintermoor..........felt so bad for you! I see the garden has gotten your spirit back up to try try again!!! I hope next summer you have an extra special garden to make up for all your disappointment this year!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

No, you dont have too, Wintermoor, LOL! I have a special box with heating pads on the bottom. The sidewalls made out of isolating material (Luftpolsterfolie). The top is open. This way, I can overwinter sensitive plants in a cold GH.
If you overwinter in the house, its a warmer anyway and there is no need for that.

Hamilton, Canada

When you dig your plants to pot them up use some bonemeal in the soil. I use 1 tablespoon for a 5 litre bucket/pot. Bonemeal helps to prevent the transplant shock.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I dont use organic material in pots to avoid rot.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Sorry, I too had problems last fall. I used fish emulsion in the GH during the fall and ended up with a white mould on the soil. Scared me to death.
