Keeping seeds fresh?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I know this has been posted before but I can't seem to find it. Since the pods are ripening I'm trying to find a way to keep them the freshest since I won't be planting them till this winter. Plastic baggies or paper envelopes, room temp in a cool spot or refrigerator? How bout envelopes in an air tight container? Anyone have any tricks to keeping seeds fresh? Also how long can they be kept and still be viable?

Great question!!!
Esp now that I have a pod!!!

Snow,
My two cents....I dry the seeds very well then just put them in one of those little paper envelopes....the plastic tend to keep in any moisture that might be in the seeds.

Snow, I agree with Gloria. I have always read that seeds need to be kept in paper rather than plastic.

I also heard that they will sprout up to five years after harvest. I've actually got some pods this year, so this is good information for me too.

Don't forget to rinse them off first to avoid the gel covering when you want to plant them.

Liz, do you rinse right after picking?

I didn't at first but I do now. It's difficult peeling slimey seeds. Just MHO though.
