I hope no one thinks I've lost it, but do gingers make babies? I mean, do they have little plantlets where the blooms were? All of these orange gingers have these little bulbie thingies where the blooms were with leaves sticking out of them. Are they baby plants? What do I do with them?
Ginger baby?
send 'em to me
OK, it's just a red leaved orange flowered one. Do you want a baby ginger for real?
does a bear potty in the woods?
I'm not sure, I've never seen a bear potty.
Maybe these are seed pods.
you got me! hahaha, yes I want some babies. I have some costus specious variegated would you like? the flower is white.
i couldn't tell in the picture, but what you described sounds like what my cannas do. they have these little green baby bulb things with what looks like little leaves starting to grow out of them, then they turn to black, and they have itty-bitty seed looking things on the outside, and big seeds that look like dried black beans on the inside. i don't know what yours are, but do you know what mine are??? hehehe...anyway, i just planted 6 gingers, so when you find out, let me know (i got the stokes tropicals' fragrant ginger collection...i'm sooooooo excited!!!!)
suz, I thought the babies were from the bottem..duhh..it is my turn for the blonde to be showing. I couldn't tell from the photo either, if they are at the bottem by the roots they are babies, but I've never known gingers to make babies at the top, I have to agree with Azalea, those must be seeds
Not seeds, but babies, I pulled one loose, its a baby ginger. They are coming out of the cone where the flower was. It's a little bulbie thingie with leaves, a whole plant like a daylily proliferation.
OK, I looked it up in my new book. It's Hedichium greenei, it produces bulbils where the flowers were and they can be planted like little plants.
Boy, ya learn something every day - this must be like Garlic or onions do.
very cool suz..i bet they would just love to live down here in the nice warm, tropical, humid south..heh heh
It is, just not as smelly, lol. The book said they sometimes do this, not always.
i am not at all familiar with costus. ginger i know, the rhyzomes have knobbies that becomes new plant. i found this url and it does say costus have seeds ... http://www.hear.org/pier3/cospe.htm
It's not a costus, it's a hedychium.
oh, that's so cool!!!! i hope the ones i planted today will do that!!!! ummmm...if you have to many of those, i've got a huge, empty backyard they can come and play in!!
Susie,
I just looked it up in my ginger book. It says that this species is usually grown for its foliage. If you want it to flower it must be watered regularly. This one is unique because it produces rhizomes on the inflorescence after blooming. Supposedly only grows to 4 ft in shade or can be grown near water in more sun. Zone 7b. Have you left this one outside over the winter before or will this be the first winter for it? Want to make a trade? Let me know.
Hedychium url ... http://www.alohatropicals.com/hedychiu.html , sorry this is the only site with photos to match the variety/ies. hedychium from what i know multiply only in rhyzomes.
MaVie, scroll down to greenii, that's the one this is. It does bloom for me, is hardy in Mississippi, haven't left it out here.
Dee, I'll save you some of the babies. I took the two biggest ones off for Lisa, will save you the next ones. It's in full sun by the Lotus. It is pretty wet there as Wally drinks out of the lotus pot and dribbles, lol. It's been blooming for a long time, had a dozen or so spikes.
