Finally this guy has begun to bloom...smells pretty nice too.
Plumeria blooming
Glory...that is a gorgeous plant with beautiful flowers! Is it tropical? Does it have babies for when I visit!
Rebecca,
Yes, it's a tropical but no it doesn't have babies. LOL What you do with the plumeria is take cuttings and they can be grown from seeds.
Here is a site that maybe be able to help you a little.
http://www.ghg.net/beyer/plumeria.htm
I tried to grow those, was killing them so gave them to Dave.
Cala,
In the winter I just hang them in the greenhouse in a corner...not even in soil. During the growing season they tend to do a lot better in a well drained area in the yard...they don't like to be soggy.
I think mine is about to bloom, been waiting a long time. Gloria, you take them out of the pot and just hang them up? Do they go dormant even if they are in a greenhouse?
BTW, Mr Roberts still has no bloom! Does yours?
Glory, that's what I did, kept it way too wet in the winter.
Weeds,
Mine went dormant in my greenhouse year before last and I kept them in a pot......I don't heat the GH unless it's freezing out side. I don't believe these flowers like to get cold at all.
No blooms on Mr Roberts Brug either...it's just got a couple on more months and out it goes...this time for good.
OK, thanks, mine go into the shed this winter too!
Mr Roberts had had a Y for at least a month and still nothing.
If it doesn't bloom for you Cala, I know mine won't!
how can anyone kill a plumeria??? i'll bet you just thought you did, but there's no way!! i keep chopping and moving and getting new ones...don't even follow the directions, just stick 'em in the ground!!! no, really!!! i have the same as the one in the pic. mine just made about 6 branches. rebecca...do you want one? i'm going to cut all the branches off around halloween to store for next year, just in case mama doesn't make it through the winter, but i have more than i need. i just got two more from hawaii, a yellow one and a pale pink one...just put them in the ground 2 days ago...give it a month. i'll send pics when they bloom. i was on vacation the first time my white one bloomed...like about 6 flowers!!! and my son forgot to take a picture!!!! i saw the end of them...darn it. five of the flowers turned into a stem, and one became another flower...weird, huh? i'll send anyone a stem who wants it for christmas!!
Meiyu,
Where do you live?
It's not hard to kill them when they sit in cold wet potting soil for any length of time. I had one that went completely to mush.
Weeds,
Don't put them where they will freeze over the winter.
okay Gloria, do they still have leaves and all when you pluck them from their pot and hang them?? poor babies, but I know I'll lose it if I don't follow your instructions for overwintering.
tiG,
You can also leave them in a pot and water them once a month or so if that makes you feel better. I always remove the leaves and that way I don't worry about the bugs.
Before I got a greenhouse I just dug them up...removed the leaves and hung them in my garage until March...from there I planted them in the ground. Don't forget my planting season is longer then yours so this worked for me. Maybe you might want to keep them in pots and just stick them out of your way.
glory, funny you should mention this. my first plumeria experience was pretty funny, cuz my neighbor gave me 4 stems in october last year, and told me to put them in water or a pot until my new house was finished being built, then put them in the ground. we didn't know anything about them except that they were from hawaii, and you had to protect them from the cold during the winter (her mother smuggled a piece of a plant while vacationing there 2 years ago). well, believe it or not, i stuck all four stems in a bucket of water, and didn't close on my house until february, 3 months late. my yard was all rock with only about 2 inches of topsoil, so i had to invest in raised flower beds, which took til april...hehehe...i'm sure you can imagin what the stems looked like by then, sitting in water on the patio all that time!!! i was so busy moving and getting settled in that i didn't even notice they never rooted and had become rotten. fortunately, the stems were about a foot long, and 3 inches or so were left on 3 of them that weren't obviously rotted, so i just stuck them in the ground after cutting the bad parts off, since i had nothing to loose. she's beautiful now!!! i had to cut off the bottoms of 2 of the stems, though, cuz i planted them in the direct, unforgiving texas sun, and, although they grew, they just weren't as green as the other one who only had sun from morning til about 1-2 pm...that one was blooming in early june!!! i stuck the very ends of the not-so-healthy stems in the same garden abuot 2 weeks ago, and they're already looking better. i guess what i'm trying to tell you is that even though you think you've killed one, just cut it down and try again with the tip. and, yeah, cut it down or pull it out in the winter, wrap it in newspaper, and stick it back in the dirt in the spring. the part that's in the ground might live through the winter, i think, if you keep the roots warm and cover it well. it just looks ugly, and seems like it should be dead, but it'll rise again, reborn, and beautiful!!! i'm told never to water them from the time they begin to go dormant until after the threat of frost is gone.
by the way, i just saw your gazebo!!!! OMG!!!! can i borrow your husband?? geeeezzzz, girl, that's beautiful!!! you need mandevillas growing up the sides!!
i've been going to biloxi almost every year for the WCPR Fest, at least until this year...hear its no fun anymore and only for one day instead of two, so no money in it. i liked biloxi alot, though...did you see the eagles there? i wanted to work those shows sooooo badly!!! i'm an old eagles fan...
Meiyu,
I had to check Google to find out what WCRP fest was....that's how old I am. LOL I believe that is something my son would attend..he's 38.
No, I didn't go see the Eagles but I remember them being here. I did however go see Three Dog Night a few years ago at a seafood fest here in Biloxi.....Now I'm really telling my age. LOL
Thanks....My DH did do a super job on the Gazebo...not bad work for a retired businessman.
mine came back from the roots, after i dumped it out of the pot and gave up on it. don't know if it'll grow enough to bloom this year but i will give it shelter this winter.
I just got my frist one a few months ago looking forward to it blooming and getting more there all around here but can't find them in stores will have to do a driveby with a sharp knife....lol
Pete,
You bad boy!!!
ummm...irish...! had i known before that you could break off a branch of a plumeria tree and stick it in the ground to grow, there wouldn't have been a safe tree in hawaii a few years back!! you're right, though, it's hard to buy them, and when you can, they're large trees and they're very pricey. the sales people get irritated with me at milberger's because i keep begging them to sell me a little piece of the tip of the smallest branch, less than 5% of the total tree, for 20% of the cost...or a $5 tip for them if they don't tell!!! hahaha!! anyway, that was my usual long-winded preface to offer to send you a root this winter if you'd like one. i have a brancher on my hands, and should have plenty for next spring and anyone who may want a piece to grow for themselves. just let me know.
Mine is blooming again. It bloomed in July and now is putting out new blooms. I think I will leave mine in pots that they are in now and wait until next spring to put them in the ground. I'll let them sleep with me if that's what it takes to keep them alive.
oh, glory...actually your son is probably too old for WCPR Fest groupies...they're my son's age (he's 18). i thought it was fun to work it because those kids made me appreciate mine!!! and i love seeing new talent, being from a family of artists! hey! glad to see you can appreciate three dog night, though...so you're not too old!!! hehe!!
Glory, I saw Three Dog Night when I was 15 or 16, love those guys! And my oldest isn't near 38 so you must have had him early!
georgiaredclay...you know you can cut some branches and wrap them up in newspaper in your garage til spring, while you cover the mama up and mulch real good, don't water (my neighbor would cover with plastic) to experiment if she'll survive a cold, dormant winter...you'll have your cut stems to grow again in spring in case she doesn't come back, or you'll have a few extras if she does!
tiG,
We both grew up together...I was 18 when he was born Ron was 21.
Meiyu,
I see you live in San Antonio...I lived there from 1983-86. Stop by next trip to Biloxi.
haha...those were about the only years i was gone from here..i was away in the navy from 1981 to 1988!! stationed in washington, dc in 1983, then key west, fl in 1984-5, then lovely beeville, tx from 1986-88...that was my ex's fault...i separated from active duty when conor was born in dec 1984.
we take a lot of road trips, and often stop at the presidents for a little craps game now and then. i'll certainly drop you a note if i head that way sometime soon!!
