Meal Bogie

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is a very delicious Scottish dish handed down from my DH's side of the family. We usually have this as a side dish on Thanksgiving with turkey gravy.

4 C. ground rolled oats
3 onions, diced
1 Tbsp. salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 lb. suet (best from around kidneys), chopped or ground
approximately 1 pint milk to moisten.

Mix all together and put in a greased pan. Place pan in a large soup stock pot, add enough water to come up to half of the pan with the meal bogie. Steam for 4 hours, checking periodically to make sure there is enough water. Serve hot with gravy.

Vegetarian version: instead of suet, use 1 C. olive oil and 1 Tbsp. butter.
