Eclipse, have you this?

I wish I hadn't lost the name to this one. I'll have to email Rita my friend who collects these and ask again what it is. It's not collocasia or allocasia, and it's chartreuse.

Calalily is it Lime Zinger? if so I have two forms of it..if not get the box ready!! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I don't think that's what she called it, I'm waiting on her reply. Seems like it had a persons name.
Somehow I knew you would say that and I've got the box already picked out and the plastic peanuts to go in it. Wonder how fast this thing multiplies.
I've got to get to her green house, it's only about 6 hours away, lol.(I would do that for an EE or ginger though and she likes to trade)

Just got an email from her, it's Xanthosoma "Maffaffa". She said when she looked in Exocita, the plant book, she found that some Alocasias used to be called xanthosoma, so that part might not be right.

Calalily let me know I have many kinds of EE's :-)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

those are edible alocasias. i had one i was suppose to cook, but they begin to sprout. i planted it in a pot. the leaves are gigantic. both roots and leaves are edible where i came from. the root i paid 25 cents from a latin store. the meat of the root when boiled is like potatoes with a very nutty flavor. the leaves we cook in coconut milk. has the flavor and consistency of spinach.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

MaVie, I've bought gingers at the store and planted them.
Eclipse, your name is on it's first baby, lol. I took photos of some of my EEs and am trying to find time to get them all in my journal.

tiG... only because i am familiar with them. 'member i grow up with tropical plants prior to coming to the US. my grandma's farm was planted with numerous varieties of taro cause it one of favorite veggie in the kitchen. this same taro is the one used by the Hawaiians called Poi [sp?], if not mistaken :).

Cala... isn't it neat to grow store bought plants :)? were u able to have them bloom yet? btw... do u have any alpinia zerumbet? lmk, i got some.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

MaVie, I don't have the alpina, would love one if you ahve an extra. The ginger hasn't bloomed, someone told me they are usually white, very fragrant. I'll post a photo as soon as it blooms.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes! defintely yes. sorry for responding late, i forgot this morning i had a dental apptmt. the alpina is growing nicely. i should be able to ship both tary and alpina on Monday. finally i got something to share with u, Cala! whooopppeeee!

MaVieRose,
My sister-in-law is from Indonesia and she cooks these like potatoes. I rather like the taste of them. I must find a place around here that carries them. If I leave them in a warm place like potatoes will they sprout 'eyes'?

Thanks MaVie, you are a sweetie.

Joydie,

Indonesia in a jump and skip to the 3rd big island of the Phil... Mindanao is where all the moslem live. as far as tropical rare and exotic plants are concerned, u find them in that area. Indonesia if not mistaken is east of Mindanao.

pls check the taro forum where i explained how i grew the taro root.
