they're thicker now, but i can't take a picture until my son fixes the camera...too old to learn new tricks!
Common name: Mandevilla, Dipladenia 'Alice Dupont'
Family: Apocynaceae
Genus: Mandevilla
Species splendens
Wow, just look at them - They're beautiful! How many hours of sun do they get there?
My house sits facing the northish...they get sun from sunrise to noonish, from their right side, then from about 4pm to sundown on their left. Cool, huh? I got some new pictures, and will post them soon, but I can't remember where or how I did the first ones...hahaha! Again, I have to find a teenager of mine to do my computer stuff, but coming soon, I promise!
Cool - I'll be watching for them. I'll just watch the threads you start so I don't miss them in some forum I don't usually see! :)
hey! did you catch my lavender mandevillas? at least i was told that's what they were...not sure, though. don't ask me where the pic is cuz i haven't figured this all out yet (sigh), but it's here somewhere, and it's really beautiful!! i can't believe they're so easy to grow!!
This one? http://davesgarden.com/s/326893.html Wow...that's something! I need to give mine more water. I think it also needs more sun. Mine's one of the upright varieties, and it's vining, but no buds. I have been kinda bad about keeping my container plants sufficiently watered this year because I've been laid up and not done as much outside as I'd like. But it's still alive!
is yours purple also? mine doesn't really vine, though. i'm sending you a pic on email. weird how yours wouldn't have any buds...this time of year? i give mine superbloom twice a month, would that help? mine has ab out 20 flowers a day, but it's not in a container, it's in a raised bed and has taken it over...no room for roomates. see your email for details...
gosh, this is frustrating...being so stupid on computers (and just about everything else!) i couldn't send it via email either! anyway, she's about 10 feet tall and about 8 feet wide. it's amazing...wish i could get her pic on here!
Mine is bright, hot pink. Just the common color, I think. I need to put it on our back patio where we'll remember to water it more often!
hmmmm...i was gonna suggest heavy mulching, but it's in a pot. someone told me that when flowers grow in pots, you have to feed them a lot more often cuz their nutrition runs through and doesn't get retained...maybe that would help? i only water mine about once or twice a week, but she has a 3 inch blanket of mulch over her roots. they say they like their feet to be cool and damp, not wet, and never let them get dried out. hard to do in a pot, huh? i'm curious to know if a mandevilla could live through an ohio winter if cut back before the first frost, covered and roots blanketed with thick mulch, and left dry throughout the winter? i should send you a cheap mandevilla to do an experiment with (i'm sure tropical plants are expensive in ohio, right? if my cuttings work out, i can send you a clone of one of mine!!)
oh, and remember, wherever you put her, she needs at least 6 hours of sun, i think. most of my flowers seem to be at the top, as though they're trying to reach the sun. on the balcony, they're out the sides, cuz that's the way they reach from up there...they get morning and evening sun.
Good morning from Sydney. They look awesome on the balcony. They will cover it up in one season. you may need a larger balcony(kidding) . I have seen them covering a whole fence. I have got mine in pots climbing on wooden lattice and some are in garden beds, I have had them for only 4 months and because we have winter here in Australia right now I can not wait for the growing season to arrive. I will post pictures of mine very soon. In Sydney they bloom all year around if they liquid fertilised.
