This will be my first brug to bloom. I'm getting really excited, and want to do this right. Am I supposed to take the big leaves off under the Y ??? Can you see the one bud that is starting to open?
What should I do?
what big fat healthy brug. Perfect if you want it for a standard shape. I take off all the growth up to the Y. what kind is it?
I take off all the leaves up to the Y too, it makes it look a lot taller and a lot better
THanks a lot, this one has 3 small ones comming up around the trunk. I guess I should leave them on huh? Don't know what kind they are. When I bought them, I didn't know there WERE differnt kinds, I thought just differnt colors. The Lady said they were mixed up and she didn't know which were pink or yellow. I bought 3, hoping to get one of each color. they were 10 inches tall. Put 2 in a pot, they both have buds. the one in the ground just Y. I really enjoy seeing & reading all the posts on Brugs, and am learning. Thanks again.
if they are coming up around the trunk, you can start new ones with them if you want. I keep most of the shoots cut off, but it's all in what you prefer. Can't wait to see your blooms!!!
I take all the big leaves off up to the Y and the sprouts that come from the bottom or soemtimes the leaf buds I root. Just whack them off flush with the stem or soil line, whichever they are growing from. Remove the big leaves from the cutting, dip in root hormone, stick in rooting medium and soon you will have more brugs.
cala, do you root the big leaves?
I too take off all the leaves below the Y, in my way of thinking, the energy then goes to the upper part of the plant to produce new buds, and concentrates on the flower....but do be careful that you dont get overzealous and nip a bud while you're ripping leaves off.....(I almost did and just about fainted...really!)
Lizh, I remove the large leaves from the trunk too and use the sprouts in the same way as Cala describe. I also try to root the smaller sprouts from the higher portion of the trunk and from the side branches. Of course, when it comes to rooting the smallest, tiny cuttings, Cala is the master, as Eric master to root Culebra. :-)
Pebble, I tried to root the leaves, they rotted, not a single one rooted. I know how you felt when you clipped a bud, I accidentally cut off a seed pod!!
Tonny, I do love the challenge of rooting things. I won't give up till I succeed.
I cut the big leaves off below the Y don't thing I cut close enough to the trunk. will cut closer in the morning. I will try to root the sprouts that are coming up beside the trunk. I don't have a green house, do you think the brugs would survive the winter in the cellar, where we keep our can food and potatoes? They would have NO light. I could put them upstairs. Which would be better?
Lizh, I would tell you but I now nothing!!! I htink they need some light but not much for you wan tthem to go dormant.
Cala.......... good that you love a challenge in rooting!! I may just send you cuttings of that purple vine I am rooting (LAUGH HERE) for you! I started with 12 pieces and I am down to 3. All of a sudden they turn black and it goes right down the stem. Well, if these 3 die I may just send you cuttings. They have lasted, what 3 weeks. You would think they would be ok but i just lost 2 more 2 days ago......suddenly!! I wonder if they would be rootable by the time they got to you?
Kell, vines usually root on semi hard/ripe growth now. Take tip cuttings, not the soft new growth, not hard last years growth, but sort of inbetween. Dip in Shultz root started, stick in vermiculite or sand or perlite. You can also try layering.
