For years I have been trying to find a particular passion vine. It looks much like the passiflora incarnata, but is extremely hardy. I remember the flower as being a deeper purple. It grew on the end of my parents porch here in s.w. missouri. Even a tornado could not destroy it. (took trees and buildings, but the passion plant came back like a trooper) The perfume was incredibly beautiful. For nostalgia sake, I would love to get another one. The fruit was very large and FULL of seeds. It also spread from the roots. Does anyone know which one it must have been and where I could get some seeds? I have a lovely incarnata from a seed trade here last year and it is LOVELY, but I still want to get the one I remember.
Thanks
Sue
Need name of a passion vine.
Sue, could it have been P.Incense? I believe it is hardy to zone 6. It has deeper color than Incarnata and has a nice fragrance. Here is a thread addy that has a picture of one. http://davesgarden.com/showthread/292774.html
I remember it as being more purplish, but reading the referal thread, I bet that is what it is. The scent was so strong. Sure appreciate the info. Now maybe I can locate one.
Sue
They are more purple looking. This was early in the season and my camera makes it look more blue than purple. I should take another picture now and I'd bet there would be a huge difference in the color. The color is more intense on my passiflora blooms now.
I bet that is it then Brugie. I sure appreciate the info.
Does the blossom also last longer than a day? My incarnata just lasts one day and the one my folks had lasted two or three.
Sue, I'm sorry to say that here, the blooms are only good one day. I'm sure it can be different in other environments though. This is a good bloomer, and I don't think you would be disappointed with it.
Brugie, where did you buy yours? Is there a really reliable place to get them?
Sue, are you just looking for one variety? If you want, I can try to root you a couple of cuttings of Incense. Let me know and otherwise, I do have a good addy for great passifloras at a reasonable price. I do have other varieties as well, but I'm not really good at getting them going. Sure will try though.
Sue, I emailed you about the Incense, but thought maybe you didn't get it. I have several vines potted up from the last rains, when they popped back out like it was spring again. If you still want this vine, let me know. You probably won't have time for blooms this year, unless we have a really warm fall, but they will grow in a greenhouse, and here they just die back until spring. To get fruit, you must grow a different variety with them, as they are sterile hybrids.
