Neat Science Project

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I let my grand daughter pollinate a brug, telling her the different parts, etc. and she wanted to do more. She said she wants to make it a science project for the Science Fair at her school next April. So, we got the camera, got pictures of her taking pollen from Eric's Dr. D and putting it on the Ecuador Pink stigma, wrapping the end up and labeleling it. She did Frosty to Shirley's Peach last week and out of the two she did, one fell off, but one is developing seeds, so again we took documentation (pictures) and today she is going to do some more. Any body with children may want to start on something like this, tho the seeds may not actually be plants by April, but she should have seeds. She is going to pollinate Dr. D (father) to Jessie Noel, Jessie Noel to Ecuador Pink, and has a few more ideas. I told her about the hummingbird moth; does anybody know the actual name of that moth? She wonders why the bees cannot pollinate, and I figured that will be something she may want to check out.

roz, that is so cool that shes so interested!! i dont know the name of the hummingbird moth, but maybe you could find it by looking up that huge catepillar that munches the brugs around here (hornworm maybe?)
what school does she go to? brandon goes to lyman and you cant have 2 of the same science fair projects, ya know.
last year we planted grape vines as a science project, and never did anything with them.
has she started a journal to go with it?
thinkin youre more awesome by the day,
jen

Grandma Roz is just the best! Great idea Roz and I'll bet you will both have a lot of fun following this project to completion.

Jen, she goes to Orange Grove, so Lyman would definitely be a different school. One year, we made an earthquake, using an aquariam, deflated punch ball with a pump in it to pump up, and different colors for the earth layers. Would you believe this kid went to State with it? This was one of my kids, not grandkids.
Glory, thanks for the info. She is keeping a notebook on everything that happens, so she will keep this name and probably find out more about it. I want to get her a shirt with a bee on the front and maybe some kind of headband; well, maybe not.......

lol, i got a "moooommmmmm, thats for girlzzzzzzzzz" response from him.
hate to say it, but my baby is growing up (sigh)
i'm sure this year, again, it will be a rush at the last minute. last year we did this (last minute again) experiment with putting alcohol in a jar and putting leaves in it..the alcohol sucked the clorophyll out of the leaves and turned the water green.
i think we're gonna do that again this year, but have an experiment that last longer than 12 hours, complete with journal, etc.
i went to state in the 6th grade with a last minute grafting project.

Way to go, Jen!

Wonderful project . . Roz!

That is a great idea Roz! I will keep that in mind. Let us know what happens with the project.

Sounds like a wonderful project and I bet you get some real winners out of that cross. Dr.D was created from Ecuador pink you know. Dr.D is a much faster grower though and much easier to root than her father Ecuador pink. I can't wait to see the color combinations from that cross. Of course all of your crosses sound great. I expect Jessie Noel x Dr.D will be my favorite though. Still, they are both going to be wonderful crosses. Those two crosses should guarantee a some wonderful color combinations.

Thanks, Eric. She is keeping a journal weekly and so far only one of the flowers she pollinated fell off; to keep up with them, she has numbered them. She had a hard time finding them once the bloom fell off, so she tied yarn around the stem, plus they are labeled, plus she has taped up the end of the bloom. I am concerned that the frost will get her seed pods, so I am encouraging her to pollinate potted plants. She told her teacher about her project and her teacher asked if she could have seeds and by the end of the day, three more teachers wanted seeds, so I imagine we will get to see some of the crosses. Of course I will definitely send you seeds, if you want and anybody else if we get any. The older grand daughter (13) is more interested in color and what the flower will be and the genetics. I appreciated your interest and your info; she will use this in her journal.
