Angel's Trumpet, Sacred Datura, Hindu Datura (Datura meteloides)

This pod opened this morning to reveal the seeds. When the pod opens like this, you should cut the pod off and put it in a cup or a bag, and let it continue to dry naturally. The seeds will eventually fall out into the container.

Common name: Angel's Trumpet, Sacred Datura, Hindu Datura
Family: Solanaceae
Genus: Datura
Species meteloides

dave, How hard is Angel's Trumpet to grow from seed? Any special tricks?

Lenjo,

They are actually real easy, assuming you have good quality seed. They grow exactly like tomatoes - sow them indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost and transplant them out.

Do exactly like you do tomatoes and they'll do great.

dave, i've never even seen any pods. maybe what i'm calling angel's trumpets aren't at all? i just stick my cuttings and water or soil and they grow...seems like seeds are too much trouble. are there some that can't grow from cuttings?

mieyu: These seed pods come after every single flower on the Datura meteloides. You may not have a Datura after all.

Do you have a picture of your plant? Maybe you have Brugmansia? (Brugmansia is like Datura, but the blooms last a bit longer, are a bit bigger, and don't usually leave seed pods behind).

Oh...well, there's my answer then!! hehehe...mine are brugs. I thought they were the same thing. You'll have to excuse me, I just started gardening in April 2002!!! Are the Daturas the ones whose flower faces upward? I keep seeing pics of what looks like my trees, but the flowers face upward instead...gardening is sooooo confusing!!! One more thing: are they both called Angel's Trumpet, or am I calling mine something wrong?

meiyu:

Brugs are Angel's Trumpets, because their blooms point downward, as if from Heaven.

Datura is often called "Devil's Trumpets" because the blooms point upward, as if from Hell.

Hope that helps!

wow...you answer fast!!! and yes, it does help. do devil's trumpets bloom at night? i also read where someone said their devil didn't smell good...?

Yes, Datura (Devil's Trumpet) blooms at night, and by morning the bloom starts to shrivel.

Most people find the fragrance of the Datura quite pleasant, actually.

where do you live, annabelle?

Annabelle...I have seeds! And the plant that I have is the white 'devil's trumpet' as referred to here in these postings...although I've never heard it referred to before as such...only as Datura: Angel's Trumpet OR Devil's Apple. The Devil's Apple, referring to of course, the spikey seed pods the plant produces.

My first plant was bought 3 years ago. And now every years my plants simply resead here in my Maine garden. I also saved some seeds to give to my friends for their gardens. So I happen to have some extra!

Post back here if you are interested...I can just drop some seeds in the mail to you. :)
