When these first appeared I thought it was spider mites but I couldn't see them. I then thought it was a virus. I sent pieces of the plant to the local University. It was cyclamen mites. They live in the new growth buds. They are very hard to kill and can only be seen with a strong hand lens or a microscope. They are sort of clear and colorless. I use Avid to get rid of them. (used Cinnamite, but it damaged the leaves and they(the leaves) fell off) The mites damage the new growth while it's still in the bud stage. This causes the leaves to become thick and hard. If you cut these off below any visible damage and spray with a good miticide, the new growth will be OK. If left alone, the leaves will turn a brownish color, then yellow then fall off. The buds will be damaged and usually not open, or will be severly distorted. These are the same mites that cause a disease called "The Blacks" on delphiniums where the new growth is dark and very distorted.
Cyclamen mites
Cala,
thanks for that info....I also have lots of Brugs with this problem.
Me too. I have been fighting them all summer, hot and dry here. I do think I am winning, as brugs are looking much better.
Before this summer, I had heard of mites, but never had any problem with them!
We name them Weichhautmilben (Tarsonemidae). I use Abamectin. It works 100% when sprayed as advised. These mites can kill a plant.
Cala, I sprayed them ALL with Cinnamite last night. How long did it take for damage to show on yours? Mine still look Okay this afternoon and I'm not seeing any signs of damage to the leaves. I think I'll die if all the leaves fall off. It might be my imagination but a swear a couple of the badly infested ones are looking like they're improving already. I even sprayed the sangs and vulcanicola. They look okay too.
From looking at the mites with my little pocket scope I'm pretty sure it's cyclmen mites that I have. I did see a couple of 2-spotted mites but it's mostly the cyclamen.
Poppysue, sometimes it takes a while for them to show improvement. Follow the directions on the bottle as to how many times to spray. Give it a couple of weeks to see improvement.
