Bought this small feeder that you just stick in a flower pot and we've had more hummers coming to it than we've had all summer(maybe they are feeding heavily now to prepare for migrating)They are busiest right before dark it seems. We sat on the patio last evening and had a ball watching them.No bright colored ones though.
Finally caught this little guy
Wow! Great picture, I'd love to have hummers in my yard. I think they just pass through here briefly during migration. I'll have to get out the feeders and try again!
OH you did it! What kind of this hummmingbird?? I need to put fresh foods out.. I noticed this morning we have few more hummers out there now.... Gotta go and fill fresh foods for them...
ginlyn that is really awesome. Where did you get the feeder?
how exciting. I too want to know where you got your feeder
We all think that this is a great shot. My whole family is sitting here looking at it. You can really see the hummer clearly. Even the wings
MiniSchnuz,I really don't know what kind of hummingbird this is(I don't know that much about birds)
elsie and pebble,my daughter got the feeder at a discount store that bought up the merchandise from a garden center that was going out of business. You might find them at a garden center or any place that sells bird feeders.I think she only paid about 1.25 for it.

Probably a female ruby throat? I think ruby throats are the only hummers that frequent states east of the Mississippi River except perhaps for southern states during migration. Even that might be iffy since most hummers in the western United States and western Canada migrate pretty much straight south, not southeast. Wish I had my hummer facts book back -- loaned it out and it's stayed out. It has tons of fascinating info, such as how far hummers fly non-stop -- across the Gulf of Mexico, for instance. Not too many rest stops over an ocean or hunk of ocean. No wonder they tank up before the flight.
Amazing pic, Ginlyn!! I have them come right up to the bay window in my living room and feast upon the flowers in that bed........absolutely fascinating to watch.
"eyes"
pretty sure it is a femal ruby throat as shendoh suggested. we have them here in the yard too gin.
Well, the honey bees took over the feeder today. We have two neighbors that have bee hives and they (the bees) must think we are the only ones around that have water. With this dry weather they're looking for water. We finally dumped out both bird baths as they were covered with bees and they cling to the garden hose where it leaks at the connection on the hose reel. It's getting very aggrivating. The neighbors swear they put out water for their bees, but ours must taste better. Two years ago they swarmed all over our hummingbird feeder till they were just hanging in clumps.Anybody have any suggestions ?
If they were hanging in clumps, they were swarming. That is when a second queen emerges and they start another hive. The neighbor should come and get them if that happens again. They would have the equipment to deal with it. Do not mess with them if this happens again. Bees are never more dangerous than at this time. If the neighbor was putting out adequate water, I don't think you would have that much of a problem. Just an occasional one as it passed looking for nectar. Do you live in the country? Does your neighbor have a food source for their bees? (clover field, fruit trees, etc?) None of my business of course, but sounds like maybe your neighbor needs to learn a little more about their bees.
Just love the hummers. Thought I'd ad a note to say that I bought some of these feeders this spring at Home Depot. They came three to a card. Only problem I've had with them is that the wind seems to deplete the liquid quickly due to the feeder swinging so freely.
That is a great hummer photo. You are so lucky to be able to photograph them. I just never seem to have my camera when they are around. Have never seen a feeder like that. Neat. I agree with Shendoh & Jody. It is a female ruby throat.
Great picture! I sent it right off to my husband's email. He will enjoy it alot. thanks
You already have a bee guard on that feeder. i would not be too happy with my neighbors if my yard was full of their bees. do they at least give you all the honey you can eat? you have to be careful I think, that he killer bees do not take over the hives.
ginny...for a gal with a new camera you are just TOOO good at this picture business!! Great shot. Jo
beautiful picture. I would like to find one of those feeders. Yesterday, I was sitting near a tree, repotting some things and everything was great. This morning I looked out the window and there are swarms of bees, looks as if they are coming from one of pots (only has ivy planted in it). There must be hundred of them, they are flying up and hitting the window. I am afaid to go out there. Guess I will have to call an exterminator if they are stil there on Monday. Any suggestions????
If you have a swarm, call a beekeeper. Bluekat76 had this experience earlier.... here's the thread she posted on it! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/510747/
