Electric Cannas.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

This is Canna "Pacifica"..has tall (6 ft) leaves that are very pointed and narrow...with the most Electric Orange flowers I have ever seen on a canna. In the evenings it bout blinds you with its brilliance..and during the day it hurts the eyes. Really makes a statement in the mixed tropical beds or alone in patches.Has bronze leaves.May have to cross Princess Di to it for seeds!!! HHmmm...... The pic cannot capture the glow of this flower...:-)

Looks great. You trying to tone it down by crossing with Di? She is so pretty. Might just make a great cross. Question: A lot of my cannas have seed pods forming. Do they need another variety to cross with to make seed, or are they self fertile? I know, another stupid question, but I have to learn somehow and you are a great teacher.

brugie..most cannas are self fertile........so even one variety can form fertile seeds. :-)

okay, so why does my Bengal Tiger never set seeds???? do I need to give it a hand? love this canna here!

Nice coloring on that kyle.

tiG bengal tiger, striped Beauty and Tropicanna are all sterile........they were all mutations..that grew and were propagated...so give up waiting for fertile seeds!... :-)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, at least I'm not doing anything wrong:)

Kyle,

Now that's what I call a brilliant orange...I have to have one of these also...begging for white and the orange canna seeds..just a couple of each...PUHLEEZ, handsome PUHLEEZ...lol....pouring on the maple syrup sweet...LOL.

Joydie I'll see what we get for seeds.Might be some later on.

I feel terrible, I have been treating my canna like weeds. I am looking at them with more interest now instead of with anger that they are still popping up even though I thought I had dug them all up. It is just that they are so invasive andif you do not have alot of space they are hogs.

This one is so pretty. I love a splash of bright orange to shake up beds a little.

Kell I tend to agree. So many plants come in vibrant red or yellow, but not many in a brilliant orange let alone orange period. Gosh the more I look at this one and the Princess Di I think I might like to find a couple more with the variagated leaves. I'm having fun experimenting with variagated folliage this year. Now I'm thinking that this canna would look great beside the croton with the red, yellow and orange leaves.

I have found a couple of seed pods on my Princess Di canna, but don't know if it will have seed or not yet. Hope so. I'd like to give it a try from seed. Saved several seeds from a pale yellow dwarf canna. Do I start them now, or when?

Brugie,

Abutilon said to wait until the seeds are 6 months old before sowing them. Any seeds that are wrinkled are not viable. You nick them first and then soak for 36-72 hours. Good luck with your seeds. Gee now I see there is a dwarf yellow and I don't have those either.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

brugie , start them next spring, nick the seed coat with a file till you see white then soak warm overnight and they come up quick! :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kyle, will put them away for safe keeping.

Forgot to ask: Will they bloom first year?

Brugie,
Mine did and the plant is HUGE with 4 big babies that surround the mother plant. The canna is sitting next to my only brug planted in the ground so it grew to be big as it got lots of fertilizer.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

brugie..yes they bloom the first year in most cases.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Good because if I don't like what I see, I don't hold it over another year. Would hate to have to hold the roots over and then find out they look like _____well, you know what I mean.
