Meconopsis grandis
Seward, Alaska
Established plant 5-6 yrs.
Common name: Blue Poppy
Family: Papaveraceae
Genus: Meconopsis
Species grandis
Ahh!!! What a lovely poppy!!!
I've tried Meconopsis for years, but the summers here are just too hot.
Congratulations Weezingreens on a beautiful, well-grown plant!
Lophophora: Our climate isn't kind to many plants, but those that survive here usually love it. The climate is cool and wet, and we have a good gravel base for drainage. The blue poppies have become quite popular in Seward, and I've noticed that several gardens have them. There are several kinds of meconopsis, so perhaps another type would work for you.
I love it~! Wish I could grow up, but I'm sure it's too hot here.
Thanks Weez -
But I've tried all the "easy" ones, esp. betonicifolia. Meconopsis is a Himalyan plant, and 36 C summers are just not to it's liking. The seed's easy enough to start, and I've got quite sizable plants of the above, grandis, X sheldonii, and napaulensis going in a winter cold frame, but *boom* come August, nothing but heartbreak.
So I'll just enjoy your wonderful pics, and think about moving to Seward. ;)
Whooooooooaaaaaaaaa Weezy!!! Could ya put a few of those on Ice, and send 'em to Texas??
"eyes"
Lophophora: Sure, you're welcome to Alaska, we'll throw some salmon on the barbie for you!
Eyesoftexas: I can send you seed, but I can't make them grow!
Wow!!!!
Alaskan Salmon BBQ???!!!!!!
(drool)
Uhh... free this Tuesday? ;-)
Lophophora: Sure, see you Tuesday! And if the weather is too rainy for a barbeque, we'll reach in the fridge and take out some of Dennis' smoked salmon. He basted the last batch with apricot/pineapple preserves and gave it a long smoke. My son dropped of a bag of smoked scallops the other day... very different taste!
Sunday was the first day of Seward's Silver Salmon Derby. People from all over the country come up here to try to hook the tagged fish since the prize is $100,000. So, from early morning until early evening, Seward looks like a ghost town while all the folks are out fishing! http://www.sewardak.org/silver_salmon_derby.htm

Hold on a second Weez -
At first it was a joke, but now it's getting cruel.

You got any rooms to rent?

You can sleep in my potting shed if you don't mind sleeping under a halogen light!
