I have been thinking about trying to grow brugs for a while and had some questions. Which is better to start with, seeds or cuttings? I saw a web site which offered both. Is now a good time to start, or do I need to wait until spring? Should I even be trying to do this in zone 5? Thanks for any advice you can give!
How do I get started?
nmax, why don't you go for a rooted dr suess. did you see brugie's post of "my doctor today".... good one fragrant, fast growing. but then you'll want more and more. if you have a greenhouse or basement or garage or sun room, start today!
Nmax - I have a couple of rooted plants if you'd like them. Pretty sure I have a Dr Suess and maybe a couple others. I'll send them for postage if you want them.
arlene,
brugie's pictures definitely will give me something to shoot for, but I'm not expecting miracles. I do have a basement and a sun room, so I guess I'm all set.
poppysue,
I would love some cuttings if you have some to spare. Sent you email.
nmax...i have seed if you want to try those.
gone2seed,
Great! You have mail.
nmax . . Email me and I will send you some cuttings.
Nmax - I didn't get your e-mail. I mailed you last night but I suspect you didn't get mine either. Not sure why. My e-mail addy is poppy_sue@hotmail.com Try mailing me direct and maybe it will get through.
I've got some brugs I've started from cuttings, they are maybe 18-24" high. They were that height when I first put them out in June! They are 2 plants each in several 12" pots. I've given them Miracle Gro , but they won't grow. They have their leaves, no problem there! Also have 3 4" square pots with 2 plants each in them that were started from seed. They are 8" high, in fact have been that height since spring. These are my first attempts at growing brugs. We got over the red spider mite problem during winter, but can't figure out whats wrong now. Or is this normal?
djm906, Sounds like they might be pot bound. I think if you put them in bigger pots or in the ground you will see a growth spurt. They need lots of room to grow and lots of fertilizer.I would also seperate the plants and put them in individual pots.

and don't worry about hurting the roots, i've cut the roots on them with a knife when i had several in a pot, no problem. they will probably sigh and reach for the sky.
Poppysue,
I did get your email and replied, but apparently you still haven't received mine. I will try again directly. If you don't get the next one, maybe you could email me with your address and what you need in postage. Then I can snail mail it to you along with my address.
Sending you mail BrugNanny!
Thanks gone2seed! I received the seeds, and I am anxious to get them started. Wish me luck!
Poppysue, I don't seem to have any luck getting email to you. I tried once again. Please let me know whether or not you received it.
nmax,I have 2 rooted frosty pinks, they are small but I can send them out to you....
Nmax - I'm not getting your e-mails. Try my hubbies at philpoland@hotmail.com
If you can get your addy to me I'll mail a box and you can reimburse me the postage after you get it. Maybe someone else can mail your addy to me?? gone2seed - do you still have it?
poppysue,
Sending you and your hubby email from a couple different accounts that I have. One of them is bound to go through. If you don't get my emails, go ahead and email me your mailing address since I receive your email messages OK. Then I can send you the postage along with my mailing address through snail mail. We might get this worked out yet!
crestedchik,
Thanks for your offer! I will send you email, or at least try to.
Thanks poppysue, gone2seed, BrugNanny, and crestedchik for your generousity! Does anyone know what web sites are good for learning all the ins and outs of growing brugs?
you are all ready on that web site. read as many back post on this form and post any questions you have somebody will have the answer your looking for
nmax . . . Irish is right, this is the best place on the web. Just review previous posts and print out any info that you want to keep at hand. Questions are gladly answered here.
Have fun with your brugs.
Brugs will remain thin and scrawny if left in a small container for too long. Of couse thats a good way to get a bucn of them through the winter if your just trying to get a jumpstart in the spring and don't have a lot of room. I place seedlings directly out of the tray a few weeks after they sprout directly into the soild. If your lucky you'll have a few blooms in less than six months from seed. If not, you could be waiting for a few years.
