I just love container gardening. You can hardly walk thru my courtyard.
My living garden chair!
kell, why don't you come spend a month with me, i could sure use your help......
Send me a picture of your yard....LOL and I will be there!!!
very pretty!! are those pink flowers the million bells, Kell?
Oh sorry......... I had first posted this under annuals and said what it was then decided it should be here instead. It is 1 wave petunia. The purple flowers to the side of the chair are million bells.
That is gorgeous!
hmmm, I think I need those containers in my perennial beds, maybe it would gussy the place up a bit.
Kell,
That is just beautiful....when ya get finished at Arlene's come on my way.
Kell,
I'm all for container gardening. They look great on patios and decks. For some reason they just fool the eye into thinking its cooler when there are plants around. Its suprising the amazing things you can do with containers and when you get tired of the look you can just move them around.
I wish you all lived around here. I buy these chairs at antique shows when I find them cheap and fill them with all sorts of things and give them away to friends............. Right now I have more chairs than I have friends..........sad but true......LOL! so my DH is going crazy with them all over!!!
Kell,
I live half a block from a trendy district. There are no less than 20 antique stores of every discription and every price range. One shop has been featured on HGTV decorating show. There are tour buses that come here to show for antiques. We have lots of very nice restaurants with fabulous foods, cafes, deli, bagel and bakery, florist, tea house etc. Its a great neighbourhood with a mix of cottages and victorian houses most of which have been completely gutted and renovated.
Today when I went for my walk I saw a gorgeous wrought iron oval serving cart and great condition but it was missing the glass. They didn't want very much for it so I might go back and pick it up. I was thinking it would be perfect on my kitchen garden deck.
I'm a recycler. I find old things and fix them up like new. Sometimes I manage to recycle wood. Thats what I used for my kitchen garden deck. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the wood and it was pressure treated. The people just had a deck builder come in and put up a larger tri-level deck. He tore the old one apart and I just asked for the wood. All it cost me was deck screws and some labour.
what kind of pot do you put in them? is it deep?
Joydie, you make me want to visit your town!! Are you near the Vancouver babes???
I love buying odd containers to plant up............ esp with moss as sides so you can plant all the way up.
Oh I forgot Miss TiGgles. I would buy the deepest pot that fits in the top of your chair. I have some that I use a wire basket in that I fill with moss and then I can plant all the way up the sides but on something like a wave petunia that will drape over the sides I use plastic. Also the moss baskets dry out fast! The bigger the plastic pot the less you have to water and the bigger the plant will grow. I take my chair to the store and try their pots. They had a great kind last year that fit right in and rested on the circle part of the chair, and this year they have gotten rid of them........sad but true!

Kell,
No I'm not in British Columbia, but in Ontario which is in central Canada. I'm about an hour's drive from Toronto or Niagara Falls if you head east...midway between the two cities.
At one time you could find great bargains at places like the Salvation Army and Thrift stores, but now they have raised their prices since there is such a hot market for antiques. Its hard to find a bargain anymore. Its alwaays nice to find something different and put it to a new use.
Hi Kell,
FABULOUS!!! I think you should rent yourself out to people like me! What's your secret? heavy does of plant food or just an extra green thumb?
Any other pics to share?

Thanks for bumping us this thread, Jeani! Wow, Kell....luv your chairs and containers. Do you live in BC? I'm always looking for chairs like that but can never find them here.

Seeing this again makes me excited for spring!!! I will startplanting my flowers all over.
I do these every year. Some, I put in several different annuals in one chair. It is so easy. My secret is I foliar feed very frequently. It seems to keep them in bloom.
Try looking a flea markets or yard sales. Some now are charging too much for old garden chairs, but if you keep looking I bet you can find some great ones at a good price.
I am not home so I have no access to pics. I live in Northern California. If you guys do some, please post pics!
Kell, Gorgeous chair. Do you ever use wooden chairs? I bought an old school desk almost 3 years ago now, the kind with the book storage under the seat. The plan was to cut out a hole in the seat for one pot, a hole in the desk for another, and also plant flowers spilling out of the book box. I painted it and it has sat on my porch ever since because I'm sure that plan will just make it rot. But I guess if it looks as beautiful as yours, I might as well go ahead and do it. For the 7 bucks the desk cost, I know I'll get MUCH more enjoyment out of it than what 7 bucks usually buys. Alrighty then, another project on the list! Thanks so much for the inspiration.

No, I haven't used wood. I wonder if you sprayed it with some sort of waterproofing chemical, if it would help preserve it for a few years of use. I have an old horse shoeing wooden container thingey from the 1800's. Every year I slap polyurethane all over the inside and out some impatiens in it though they are in plastic containers. I know I miss when I water some days, so the polyurethane protects it some.
Please post a pic Michele, when you get it going. It sounds like it would be so cute.
I will. Thanks for the info, Kell.
Michele
