broken brug

Rain and high winds came thru last night and one of my brugs with buds got snapped off. My question is: do I strip the buds off or let them stay. I already took off the majority of leaves and put the stem in water, hoping for roots. I am just SICK>>> I have never had one bloom before and was thrilled at finding the buds. Now I am heartbroken. Oh well... Oh - what should I do with the 2 foot that is left in the pot (the Y broke off with the top piece that I stuck in water)

This is so sad. I've had it happen before. If you lost the Y, you will just have to wait for the potted part to put up a new stalk and Y again. Hopefully the one in water will root for you and then after potted it will proceed putting on buds. It will be shorter though. I don't believe the trunk will get any tall at this point. I can't answer the question about removing the buds because I've never tried to save the tops that have popped off. Good luck. Maybe those little buds will hang on and become great flowers for you.

try leaving the buds on the piece in water, you might still get to enjoy the bloom, depending on how far along they are.

I would leave the buds on too. I had a 7 or 8 foot piece break off during rain and wind with blooms on it. It broke off so low (multiple trunks) that it had a very few tiny roots sticking out. I put it in a container of water and it has lived and developed a larger root mass (probably been a month or more). Bugs finished off what few large leaves were there, but it still had small ones which have grown some, and it looks like it has tiny bloom pods on it. I think I may get brave soon and put it in the ground, but I'll have to support it with a stake. I added some fertilizer to the water one time, think I'll do it again.

I have a bucket on my porch of blooming brugs from pruning a neighbors brug tree a few weeks ago. I never got around to stripping the big leaves or the buds. It dropped its big leaves by itself but kept all its buds and has been flowering ever since. The flowers are progressively smaller but still a treat! And now there are roots on all the pieces.

Thanks everyone - I feel better now that I read all your posts. I do have 5 others that all have buds, but to lose one that I started from seed was tragic for me!! I'll keep you posted on the buds.
