This is a flower from a plant that Eric pulled from the garden last fall. I wasn't sure I was going to save the plant last year, but it made it as you can see. The color is a little bright. The bloom is more of a pale yellow, short tendrils, and a scent to die for. The tendrils tend to all twist counter clockwise. It was very waxy last night when I picked the bloom. Had to keep my nose in it as long as I could. Later it began to smell more like lemons. What might this plant be? Any ideas. I'm sure it was grown from seed, but would like a little background.
Pulled from it's roots.
It looks HUGE
CC, it is about the same size as a Suess. It is just the way I had to hold it to keep the dark background solid. I was too lazy to unfold the throw to give myself more working room.
beautiful Brugie, but I cannot even identify a CG until after days of ruminating when they are right in my own yard!
wish I could help!
Well, Kell, no problem. At least we know it isn't a CG since it is from seed. I do like it though. Will have to wait and see how it blooms in cooler weather.
if it smells like lemons could it be citronella?
the fragrant white smells like lemons to me, but did you say this one was yellow? must be one of his hybrids.
Very nice bloom....it looks huge, judging by your hand (being fairly small next to the bloom....) unless of course you have barbie sized hands...lol
Sorry Pebble, I have large hands, but it is just the way I was holding it. I'd say it is about the size of a CG or Dr. S. In my case, I have to compare to Dr. S. Eric told me it was a seedling that must have just dropped out of a pod and started. I think I'll keep it. It seems to hold up better against this heat and even had some viable pollen that I'm playing with.
Yes, tiG, it is a pale yellow darkening only a little in the second day. I'll try to get a picture and send it to you tomorrow, but if my brain is on slow, don't expect anything. Have to make that salsa tomorrow so I'll be thinking in one lane.
Oh dear Brugie............do you already have a CG?
No Kell, I don't have one. Just compared it to the CG size. I had heard that CG and Dr. S. were very hard to tell apart except for the foliage. Mine is serrated, so I know I have Dr. S., several times over.
oh good Miss Brugie............CG was the only one I could share with you after all your kindnesses!!!
I'll be glad to get it. Thanks Kell. You are a sweetie.
Hello, Brugie!
My, what a beautiful plant! How warm do you keep your greenhouse in the winter? I have never grown them so I really shouldn't be posting here. I would love to put one of those in my 'Peach-of-a-Garden'.
I live in zone 8. With a lot of mulch, would they survive outside?
yes evelyn, they would die back, but come back in the spring. I'll have some peach cuttings for postage closer to the end of October if you want to write me then. I'll be posting what I have then too.
WOW! Oh, thank you SO much, tiG!
Should I hold them over 'til next spring, or just plant them out?
Morning sun, afternoon shade? Rich, moist soil, right??
I can email you a few items I have for trade, if you wish.
if you can hold them inside would be better, they won't be established enough. I'd rather let them go for postage, I have so many things I already have to overwinter and take care of now, it's crazy!!!
I'll post and let you know when
That sure is a pretty one Brugie.
That one has a bit of suaveolens in its background. That much is clear. I don't actually grow all the seedpods I pick and as that one was one of the errant seedlings in my yard I have to confess well never know its parentage.
Well, Eric, this is one I'm keeping anyway. I just like the looks of it.
Sorry I didn't get online earlier tonight, but had a big family thing out here and before it started, we had to call the ambulance to come get my MIL. She has been transferred to DesMoines, so only time will tell.
Evelyn, my greenhouse isn't heated or used in the winter. Sometimes we get down to 20 below zero and I don't think I could afford the propane for it.
Shirley!!! is she okay? are you okay? is DH okay?
Brugie, I just don't know what to say in circumstances such as this. All I can say is that my heart goes out for you and yours. It means a lot to me that your keeping any hybrid of mine by the way. I know I talk a lot, but thats just my nature from time to time. What really gets me excited is seeing you guys posting about what crosses your planning.
Thanks for your concern. Jim is a little wiped out right now. He never thought he would see something like this happen, but he will be okay. I'm pretty strong and will help him as much as I can. Hopefully she will come through whatever this is and be okay or as okay as she can be at her age.
Eric, I've made a couple of crosses and they have held. Probably the two best right now are the Pink Beauty X Butterfly and Whiskers X Tropical Sunset. Since PB has Ocre in her background, I'm not sure what I'll get from this cross. Also did Tropical Sunset X Pink Beauty, hoping for the yellow to really show up. Have lots of pods that are unmarked. I was bad about just hitting a flower with the pollen on the brush when finished with my planned pollinations. 99% of these pods won't mature anyway since they are on brugs that are planted in the ground and I'm not going to dig them up. Too old for that kind of work. :-)
If your just letting them go,then wouldn't it be a good time just before frost to just cut them off at ground level and throw them in a bucket.........
Some might make it!
CC, I think Monika said that seed pods won't go ahead and mature when you cut a chunk off the plant with the pod. I've taken cuttings from everything I want to save and even from the ones in pots that I'm saving. On some in the garden that have pods and are a good cross, I'm air layering so I can cut and pot and hopefully the pods will mature. Have to tell you that your PB that you sent me has finally made a Y. Boy, that was a slow precess.
I've just got to get a different setup here for holding plants and pods over. I still have several plants that haven't bloomed, but today, Arlene's white aurea NOT, has put up a bud. So, there is still hope yet, for most of them.
Shirley,
that is one pretty Brug!!!
Thanks Glory, I just wish there was some way for Eric to ID it, but I guess this will just be one of those unknowns.
S,
How's your SIL?
Glory, my MIL is doing okay. She is a tough old bird.
Thinking of you Shirley - I'm so sorry - I hope she fights back.
