Just wanted to share this. On June 6th I pollinated James with Pollen from Versicolor Peach...today the pod was ready to pick....guess it's the heat.
FYI.seed pod
Way to go Glory! Wow.
That sounds like a record. Do they normally mature that fast for you?
Glory, are you going to save the seeds for next spring to sow? Or do you do it now?
Glory,
It certainly must be the intense heat everyone is experiencing. Congrats on your hybrid.
Gosh Gloria, that short period of time is incredible. Wish they would all mature that fast. Hope you got some great seeds from that cross. Not a single pod has set on here. I guess it is just too hot to get started. The pollen hasn't been good. Fries on the anthers. :-)
Amazing! Hope they'll mature quick here too as my growing season is running out and have a few crosses I really want. Cala showed me how I can bring them in and mature them if need be.
snow, at Eric's suggestion, I'm going to air layer mine. I think I have a better shot at not losing them than if I try to root the regular way.
Snow, mail me with instructions, please. tiG, I'd try that too, but have no pods yet. Can't get any good pollen. Last night, I did have good pollen on one of Eric's (unknown). I stuck it on some of the other flower in bloom like Frosty and Isabella just to see if it would work. Their pollen isn't good now, so didn't know if the stigma would accept pollen. Just had to try.
Guys, don't forget, eclipse says the pods will mature while the plants are dormant, as in a basement. tig did the pod fall off the cutting you took? i am sure somebody probably cala rooted cuttings with pods on them last year.
forgot to say, the 2 pods i picked while the girls were here were critter fertilized in early May, a little over 2 months but not that fast! i have pods on pink beauty, my first aurea type pods, do these pods take longer to mature? and glory, is james like dr suess? i can't remember.... no surprise....
Wow,and to think my one pod took 7 months!
yes, that pod fell off, so sorry. but one cutting is doing nicely, so ...
I'll keep the ones on the trees that I bring in, I think my lights will be enough to keep them going. it's the ones in the ground that I worry about taking care of the pods. (we put Butterfly in the ground)
tig, i was just curious if it made it, there will be more pods. i broke into the pod on that plant, not ready!
does anyone know if aurea pods take longer than the others?
Well, I for one don't know anything about any of the pods. Just that the one I had a couple of years ago wasn't ready soon enough.
This pod is a record for me....I have had three month maturity but never 2 months.
Arlene,
James does looks like DR. Suess but smells more like Aurea to me.
Kelley,
not sure what I'll do with these seeds...I still have lots of baby Whiskers X Golden Lady seedlings to tend to.
Jeanne,
Great on the seeds...I haven't planted any of them yet....these should be interesting to see when they bloom.
I just realized that the leaves on the James are smooth...maybe it's a Charles G. Hybrid?
