Common name: Persian Shield
Family: Acanthaceae
Genus: Strobilanthes
Species dyerianus
I Found the firt one in my life at a produce stand. And the girl couldn't tell me much about it.I live in Anderson,S.C.,
The climate is fairly warm .Will This come back next year or have i wasted my money?I try to plant only perennials.
And do I plant it in full sun etc.?
What zone are you in? That would help everyone here try to help you.
I am in zone 4, and I lost mine last year because we had a surprise frost and I didn't have it in yet. Gonna be smarter with my new babies. This is the most stunning plant!
Love the picture! You have quite an eye!
yvana :)
In zone 5 it is not hardy. I grew mine in a very large container in full sun. In early June I pinched it back for a fuller plant. It responded beautifully.

I want to know if you make it bush out by tip pinching like coleus. I have two that junmped from 6" to 12" in 4 weeks and I wonder about pinching to prevent legginess. They are gorgeous and I did read that they make good house plants if kept moist. I'm also into mostly perrenials and this is listed as a tender perrenial. I've wintered that category in Austin with "ensulate" covers and by bringing the potted ones close in...until last winter's prolonged freezes! I lost a lot but am optimistic (aren't all gardeners?) that we're not apt to have another year like that. I'm in the land of "do they really mean FULL SUN or is that elsewhere?" I'm figuring we'll have a pretty hot summer as we have a mini-draught predicted. TO PINCH OR NOT TO PINCH, THAT IS THE QUESTION. :)
