I have two red twig dogwood that are about thirty years old . They are looking pretty much worn out. What is the life of this shrub. When is the best time to trim?

padoco... Most of the pruning suggestions I have seen recommend that the inner stems be pruned away as they age and turn dark brown instead of red (the winter color). I don't recall any suggestions about how many times you can do this before you have a gap in the center, or whether new stems will grow into the center.

Cannot answer longevity, either. I've only had mine about 3 years, but wanted one ever since I saw some on the way to visit relatives. Theirs are around 10 years old and they keep adding new ones every year so that their long road up to the properety is framed in them.

Hi, there, Darius :) I'm thinking about adding 1-2 of these to the yard, and I was wondering if you could tell me about their fruiting habits. Do you know if they need to have other same plants to fruit or if they are self-pollinating? I'm mainly planting mine for the birdies, and I'd like to choose something else if fruiting is going to be tricky with my limited space. I've seen Redosier Dogwood showing up all over the place in reading about attracting birds, so I'd really like to use it if I can.

Thanks!
Jacci

Jcci, unfortunately I cannot help with the fruiting aspect. In the 3 years I had mine, there were no fruits, and it was a single plant.

Will the Deer eat this shrub? Thanks.

No deer in the suburbs I lived in at that house so I really do not know.
