I guess I do not have a Roter Vulkan. The leaves looked the same. Mine is labeled red angel. Is that a variety or a generic name for the red ones?
So did you see my orange sang picture? What would your aim be in breeding my orange one with the Roter Vulkan? What characteristics would be desirable from the offspring of the 2?

Kell, I only have the one Roter Vulkan. The leaves are more glossy than this, sort of the same shape though. The blooms on RV are maybe a third the size of a sang in length and width. Roter Vulkan is not the strongest brug in existence. If you find one that blooms for you take the pollen to one of your sturdy sangs. Your sang has the staying power and strength that Roter Vulkan hasn't.
Honestly - I don't expect mine to last the year - TG, I have pollen in the freezer.
I haven't seen the name Red Angel - is it all red?
I guess I'll have to drill back and find your orange sang.
Characteristics? Something that will survive more than two years to start.

Liz, I saw my sang for the first time today in Marin, hot Marin! In a nursery. The name they had on it was Inca Queen..........that is my orange sang. I now have to look at Kartuz for a picture of it...............i do not think it is.

I thought Inca Queen was the all red one and Inca Princess was the all yellow. Sang that is, not vulcanicola.

Monika is our vulcanicola, sanguinea, arborea type expert. Heck, our overall expert is Monika.

Monika has said she won't grow the sangs and the vulcanicolas because she doesn't like that they're not scented.

Liz,
I do realize that they aren't scented, but if you cross an arborea to a vulcanicola...as an arborea is scented...arborea x vulcanicola...cross that same cross to arborea x sanguinea...some should be scented. I do believe I have heard that such crosses are often not very strong, but thats a good reason to breed for strength for that particular type of cross. One could then of course cross arborea x sanguinea x( arborea x vulcanicola) to arborea x aurea. Then of course...breeding to aurea x arborea a second time and then to aurea...well it might just be possible to have a red aurea type or even a hybrid with all 6 hybrids given enough time. Of course, we might be able to breed a red aurea using nothing but aurea's.....

Brugman,
I think you need to give it a try....I'd love to have a Red Brug that will live in our heat. A red Aurea would be just beautiful.
Roz will soon have flowers on her Arborea and hopefully we'll have lots of Red Sang. pollen for them.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

OK brugman, you're on. I've got all of the above. I hope I live long enough to see it through. Just need to get the arborea blooming. I have a feeling that the only things that are going to be in the cool gh this winter are arborea, sangs, vulkan, and does it have to be a pure aurea?

FSH, TX

I believe Butterfly should work, but Rothkirch would be preferable.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

OK - well I have a Rothkirch too - better upgrade it's feed.

Liz, how is your Rothkirch doing? The one I got from Hodnik's looks like #$@*. I don't know if it will make it or not. Can you start me a cutting?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

As soon as I can Jeanne - will look at it tomorrow.

FSH, TX

All you need is some pollen. Go for the pollen first, cutting later. Get started on some Rothkirch crosses.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Nobody has the pollen ~ we've tried

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Liz, any blooms on the Rothkirch yet?

Preissel had in 1995 sang. x vulc. x arborea hybrids in bright colors, red, orange, lilac etc, never seen before. Dutch nurseries cultivated them. But they gave up as the plants were too sensitive. This says a lot.

Last night, I had a long talk with Ludger and we will start another project of hybridizing sang. with arborea. The large fruit on my Mobisu x arborea should contain enough seeds for large variation. Mobisu is a arborea Engelsglöckchen x sang. hybrid and well scented.

Liz,
Inca Queen is yellow with the red border. I couldn't find a picture of the yellow sanguinea.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I was just going by the Kartuz catalogue which says it's red. Kell ordered from them. They have the yellow too.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Monika, what made you decide to try this? I love the idea, but will you raise them elsewhere from your other brugs?

Monika, With your expertise, you will surely create the most wonderful arborea x sangs the world has ever seen. I'm waiting for some arborea pollen and will cross that with the four sangs I have blooming now. Hoping for some interesting results.
