I keep buying rosemary plants and in a week or sometimes 2, they are brown and dead.
What is the proper way to treat Rosemary? This is one of my favorite herbs and I can't get the thing to grow in containers.
Our soil is acidified by my neighbor's HUGE pine trees that overhang our yard.. but these were in containers!
Thanks in advance,
Janie

hope this url help ... http://www.seedsofknowledge.com/rosemary.html
Are you buying the plants from the same place?
Janie
are you letting the plants dry out at all. Rosemary does not like to dry out at all. but also that does not mean keep it soaking.
I know now what I did wrong. I thought Rosemary hated wet feet so I was afraid to water it much and evidently I allowed the roots to dry out.
Thanks everyone!
And by the way, Baa, good question: no, I do this to ALL rosemaries (but I won't do it any more!)
Love you guys and your wisdom,

Glad you found the problem :) Some books give out all sorts of information, what they won't tell you is how to adapt it to your own gardening situation!
Janie
not wet but kept damp not left dry out likes well draining soil but should hold moisture at the same time. Does this make sence to you or am i confusing you
Rosmarinus officinalis
marinus basicaly means water i am told
I liked the image of taking a shower, it helps me understand the ways of the plant. Hopefully I will be able to keep the new ones going.
Thanks!

Rosmarinus translated means Dew of the Sea, marinus is the word we get marine from. This is because it's native to coastal regions of Southern Europe. It's very salt tolerant which is why it does so well in the British climate.
cool
if it is salt tolerant doea that mean it would not hurt to put a bit of salt in from time to time if that is how the plant developed ofver time?

I personally wouldn't add salt to any plant unless they specifically required it. Rosemary has been grown all over the place and many are well adapted to the climate they are living in which is a good reason to buy as locally as possible.
