I've tried cuttings in perlite, but maybe I'm not doing it correctly. How much water to you keep in the perlite?
What's an easy method of setting up a misting system?
Kyle-Rooting cuttings in perlite
I tried the perilite too, didn't have as much luck as I do with vermiculite....
CC,
How is your sanguinea coming along? I think mine won't bloom until the end of the summer.
My DH asks me that everyday!!!LOL.He's the one who wanted one soooo bad.My buds don't seem to be getting any larger but there are more of them.Just sitting here holding my breath!Gunna try straight manure(old manure)Then I'll really be holding my breath!
joydie..I use vermiculite not perlite.I put them in a flat that has about 50 2 1/2 inch holes in them and start the cuttings under a mist system..you can do same thing at home..but spray every so often with a mist bottle sprayer.
Kyle thanks....errrrrrgh, lol. I'm trying to get the small side shoots to root without them giving up the ghost.
CC,
Mine is still making more Y's but no evidence of buds yet. As an aside, one of my Missouri Marble started to flower and I almost missed it. It has a slight tint of blue around the rim of the flower. Its a much larger flower than the inoxia white and the calyx is also variagated. How beautiful they are!! Lovely scent also, just wished they lasted longer. Another one threw off a shoot that is reverting. Can hardly wait to see what that one does. Oh my garden lifts my spirits!!
Holler when your sanguinea blooms and PLEASE post pics.
Hugz,
I've rooted tiny side shoots, biggest of the 3 leaves less than an inch. I dip in rooting hormone and then in sand in coke bottle with no bottom. My Butterflies I did that way are growing great.
tiG... you have butterflies cutting's rooting???? hint hint....
yes doll, and you can count on it. send me your addy!!!
TiG,
Do you use sea sand or builder's sand? Have to make sure I do this right. I was spraying my leaves with dilute fertilizer and some fo the vegetal growth had small root bumps.
Last week I stripped all the lower vegetal growth off all my brugs to encourage the growth to go into the top of the plants to produce Ys. I left only one shoot on at the very bottom of each plant. The top vegetal growth has now just shot up so I have wonderful full growth on the tops...lots of Ys will form this way (when the make Ys) My plants already look like trees!!!
I will wait a little bit and then propagate the bottom single vegetal growth. Maybe I'll also try the rooting hormone in sand method. I'm just pushing these plants to flower this year. They are all from seeds planted in Jan-Mar. Most are now over 4 feet with huge thick sturdy trunks. The roots are now coming out the bottom of my 5 gallon buckets...
Two women across the street also have brugs that they bought last year and my seedling plants are wayyyyyyy bigger than theirs...lol...Miracle Grow Plus is certainly working!!!

Go down to the grocery store and steal the mister they use on the produce. I hate those things; you end up paying more by weight for the water! I also have been squirted two or three time by those danged things.
Woodspirit...
Too funny...lol. I'm going to have to check to see how I can rig up some kind of misting system CHEAPLY!! Off to search the web now.
CC,
I found 2 little tiny flower buds on the sanguinea. YIPEEEEEEEEEE I'm going to have flowers within the month. Oh I can hardly wait.
Joydie...I don't know if this would be helpful to you or not. I was at our local Wildbirds Unlimited store just the other day and found a misting hose type of gadjet for $19.95.
The hose/tubing is only about 1/4 inch in diameter and is 35 feet long. The distal end has an attachment that causes the water to come out as a very fine mist. I wired this end to one of my plant stands and have the other end connected to a regular sized hose. I then run some water through few times a day.

Hello Renee,
Good to see you back here again. You have got to visit and get involved more often. We miss you here.
Joydie,
Sea sand contains salt.
I totally missed that question, sorry. I use sand for kiddies sandboxes. I asked Cala, she said it was okay. Just happened to have a new bag around, so I confiscated it.
I just pull the side shoots off and put them in a cup of water in the shade outside. A few days later....I plant them in good potting soil and set them back in the shade for a couple weeks to let them take root. Easy and 100% success. I think you guys may be trying to make it difficult:) lol
Owen
when I say side shoots, I'm not talking about when it forms a stem, I mean when it's just 3 little leaves, the kind we usually pull off. just to clarify, it does work
Owen,
We are talking about little side shoots less than 3 inches or so long. The larger ones are easy enough to root in water. I just don't want a lot of side vegetal growth along the lower trunk right now to suck energy away from my plants producing Ys. I already have mine trained to produce trees with lots of side vegetal branching at the top so both the side branches at the top and the main shoot with all make Ys producing a larger canopy. I'll post a picture to better explain what I'm trying to do.
TiG,
I'll try the play sand method also, but will thoroughly wash the sand fist to remove salts. Its just a shame to pull off these small side shoots and toss them into the compost.
I agree if you have the room to grow them. and it's an easy way to get new starts of the best without cutting while it's blooming.
OK. I understand what you are doing now:) I simply give those tiny shoots a couple of weeks to grow larger, and then put them in water.
If you find a way to root them while they are still tiny that's fine....but I am lazy, so I just let them grow a bit larger and then pull them off. lol
Owen
Joydie, I just bought the playsand at the WalMart Store and rooted a couple of small cuttings. It worked great. I didn't wash the sand. I don't think it has salt in play sand.I rooted them in cell packs and put some vermiculite in the bottom to keep the fine sand from running out the hole.
Thanks everyone. I'm going to track down Wildbirds Unlimited that would be closest to me and compare their price with prices up here for a small misting system. Will try the play sand and misting and see how that works in the meantime.
