Bert wants to be a Dat

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I posted a picture of Bert blooming in the winter in the GH , totally horizontal, didn't droop even after a few days - Monika said pictures shouldn't be taken until July. Bert now blooms up, like a Dat.
Bert was crossed with brugcrazy's multi aurea (I'm calling it Ernie - as in Bert and Ernie)
This is Bert right now - and if I had half a brain I'd be able to post their egg together

The bloom on the left is about 5 days old, browning around the edges, still pointed up.
Jen - I don't know the parentage - I begged it off a wonderful elderly gardener who I read about in the local paper. I emailed the garden writer at the paper and begged to be introduced. Brugs are not really his thing - he hybridizes pelargoniums.

Very pretty flowers and a very cool picture. Don't think I've ever seen a Brug facing up.

Wow, now thats what I like to see. Very nice indeed. Butterfly almost does that sometimes. Almost....Still,very nice hybrid indeed and that angle is one to die for.

Brugman - what is in it that makes it bloom up?? That's what I'm trying to find out.

Liz,
I'd have to say its aurea parentage, but to be sure I'd ask the expert. Versicolors tend to point down. Hybrids of versicolor tend to have longer calyx's, but not necessarily a crescent moon type calyx. Suave. hybrids point out and down. Aurea's tend to point upward and outward the most.

Liz . . That is quite an outstanding brug. I have never seen one like it. You have many beautiful brugs to be proud of.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I love that,its so different!

That is a beautiful aurea a little more golden than mine. The same kind of upwards pointing to horisontal flowers and the same type of leaves. There is a slight difference in the curve between the tube and the flare, but that is all. I think they are different and could be crossed.

Wish we could get them all to bloom "up". When you really want to see a brug bloom and smell it, it is very unhandy to go under it to see inside.

So much for telling the newbies the way to tell the difference between a Datura and a Brug, is how the blooms go up on Dat. and hang down on the Brugs. ha!

Ha, ha! Hibiscus. I just imagined, if everyone had as small plants as mine we would probably all have to lye on our backs in the garden to smell them. LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Hibiscus, works both ways. i have some that i have to stand on tip toe to get to....

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

wow..that is another beauty...

Liz, this picture is just great. I love the upward tilt to the blooms. The color is great too. You did good girl!!
