Volcanicola and Sanguinea

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Can anyone tell me if these can stay outside
year round in zone 9 Calif. ? I have them planted in the ground right now and am wondering if I am going to
need to put them in pots.

Thanks , Patricia

I would think so, Jerodsmom. I have a sang planted for years here with no protection. Do you get colder than I do in the winter? How did they do for you with your hotter temperatures? Did your Volcanica bloom for you? Mine has not yet.

Hi Kell, I grew my Sanguinea from seed this
Spring and it hasn't bloomed yet. My Yellow sanguinea and the Volcanola are new. I have them planted in
semi shade as is my red Sanguinea. It handled our
111 day's fine where it is located. Yes , we do get
more frost and freezing nights than you do. We had
at least 6 weeks of below freezing tempreatures this
last winter. However last winter was out of the ordinary also. I am just wondering if it freeze back if it will come back from the roots. Thanks for answering my post.

it is my experience that the sangs can tolerate a whole lot more of the cold than the other brugs. Mine does not even drop its leaves. We got some freezing nights here also. I would leave them in the ground and just take cuttings just in case you have to restart them in the spring. But I be they will do great. Did you see my posts on my sang? flowers and trunk? mine even lived thru that horrible freeze, what was it, 6 years ago?

Wow , that is impressive. I will follow your advice and
take cuttings this Fall. Thanks alot for you input.
