Morning Glory 'Mt. Fuji' (Ipomoea purpurea)

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

This plant can grow up to 10 feet, but usually are about 5 feet. The flowers can be a range of colors from pink to blue, all with a white wagon wheel effect on the flower. They only open one day but flowers are large for the family.
This is, indeed, the king of Morning Glories.

Common name: Morning Glory 'Mt. Fuji'
Family: Convolvulaceae
Genus: Ipomoea
Species purpurea

It seeded & I let the seeds drop in the soil, never saved them, but should have. Maybe this year, I will. I bought the plants at an Amish greenhouse in Lancaster county.

Hi Buttoneer,

This is the Fuji general mix entry and as such posters are free to place their photos here if they so choose...my offering was intended as a general reference for any who might be interested in a more specific perspective...

I usually post to the Morning Glory forum,The Identification Forum and the PlantFiles where I focus most specifically on identification and clarification of plants in the Morning Glory Family of Convolvulaceae
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/imagesbyuser.php?user=RON_CONVOLVULACEAE

There has never been a legitimate species epithet of 'x imperialis' as this is a marketing name and has never been a legitimate scientific botanical species epithet...and although the Mt.Fuji is 'technically' an interspecific hybrid...it is mostly composed of Ipomoea nil,the important structural identifying characteristics are those of Ipomoea nil and it will readily cross with other Ipomoea nil...

I would like to suggest that you might assist the everyday usefulness and relative accuracy of the Morning Glory PlantFile listings by updating the species epithet as this is one of your entries
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/browse/user/Buttoneer/
on the main entry page of the Fuji mix here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/49146/
from the scientifically non-existent 'x imperialis' to nil (to match all of the other Fuji and Youjiro series currently entered into the database)...'x imperialis' should or could be entered as a synonym or perhaps entered in with the additional cultivar information...
of course this is at your prerogative and your personal choice as per your main entry...

I apologize if my work on growing out and placing images of the relatively rare Ipomoea species in the PlantFiles has delayed me from reviewing and offering an update suggestion of the main entry page epithet on this Fuji mix
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/49146/
(which is your) entry somewhat sooner...

Best Regards,

Ron

Ron, no problem. I took every morning glory seed I had and planted them in two planters to see what I would get. There are hairy ones, etc, Maybe I might create something new & exciting? I have hyacinth beans etc in there with them. A couple years ago, I tried to plant hyacinth beans in the planters & the groundhogs ate them, so last year, we put up screen wire & this year, I decided on all MG's and other vines to grow up & over the screen. It ought to be very interesting. Thanks for your advice. B.
