Barrel-a-Cannas

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

You could say I'm a Canna Newbie. I planted these in a whiskey barrel with a few other plants. I must say they look pretty cool! Don't know why I've never tried them before!

They're just beautiful ! Nice plant, the colour of the leaves of that Canna is lovely.
PoppySue, please post another photo when in flower.

What a gorgeous arrangement! What variety of canna are you growing? I also like the height that it gives to the garden, as well as, complimenting the purplish pink flowers on the rightside of the barrel. You should enter it into the container contest. It's a sure hit!

I too tried them this year in a container on the deck. Last year I tried them in the border but I couldn't keep up with the japanese beetles that loved them. I didn't plant any thing under them and and am sorry after seeing yours, spectacular!

Poppysue,
Those are just lovely. I grew cannas about 20 years ago and forgot to dig the tuber up in the fall. This year I have 3 of them and put them in containers. I love the variegated folliage ones. They make a stunning leaf color and shape contrast when unplanted with other flowers.

Have they bloomed yet, Sue??

They're just starting to put out a couple of blooms. It's a spindly red flower. I'll get a pic sometime when more open and maybe you can ID it??

Sounding more like a Black Knight...and closer inspection of the leaves suggests that also.

Here are the flowers. I don't think it's Black Knight. They're too spindly ... http://davesgarden.com/s/327360.html

I got a mix of dwarfs from wally world. I ended up with one that has yellow striped leaves. Not sure if it came with the trade or from the WW-mix. It hasn't bloomed yet but has a big bud coming. I just got a topicana in a trade a couple of weeks ago. I like the striped leaf types. These tall red ones are pretty neat too. I think I'll put them in the back of my border next year.

Poppysue,
The striped leaves are wonderful especially the yellow and green type.
